GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University baseball team defeated Gwynedd-Mercy College, 6-4 in a nonconference game on Tuesday afternoon.
The Profs have a 13-4 record. Rowan is ranked 11th in this week’s D3baseball.com/National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Top 25 Poll and 14th in the American Baseball Coaches Association/Collegiate Baseball Poll. The Griffins are 8-11 overall.
Right-hander Mike Behar (jr. Staten Island, NY/Tottenville) pitched five innings for the win. He (2-0) scattered four hits and gave up one earned run, while stiking out four hitters. Lefty Kyle Brown (jr. Southampton, NJ/Seneca) threw the final 0.1 innings for his second save of the season. Right-hander Jamey Minnemeyer (fr. Lansdale, PA/Lansdale Catholic) took the loss. He (3-3) allowed two earned runs on four hits in two innings.
Shortstop Mark Magliaro (sr. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) led the Profs with three hits (five at bats), one RBI, one run scored and one double. Designated hitter C.J. Szymczak (jr. Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) registered one hit (two at bats) and three RBIs. Right fielder Matt Hill (sr. Hamilton Square, NJ/Robbinsville) went one for four with one run scored. Catcher Nick Turano (sr. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) added a double (three at bats) and one run scored. Designated hitter Rich Fagan (jr. Nutley, NJ/St. Benedict’s Prep) and third baseman Kevin McMenamin (fr. Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) both collected one hit (two at bats) and one run scored.
For Gwynedd-Mercy, third baseman Josh Martin (jr. Pottstown, PA/St. Pius X) was four for five with two run scored, one RBI and a double. Catcher John Burns (so. Levittown, PA/Neshaminy) chipped in with a double and two RBIs. Right fielder Rick Elfreth (fr. Sicklerville, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) posted one hit (four at bats) and one RBI. Second baseman Shane Lynch (jr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) tallied one hit (five at bats) and two runs scored.
The Griffins got on the scoreboard with one run in the top of the first inning. Lynch singled up the middle. He scored on Martin’s double down the left field line. In the bottom half, the Profs got two runs for a 2-1 advantage. Magliaro and left fielder Mark Benak (so. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) recorded back-to-back singles. Turano walked to load the bases with one out. Szymczak drove in Magliaro and Benak with a single through the right side.
Rowan tacked on two runs in the third to go up, 4-1. Hill singled up the middle and Turano followed with a double to left center field. Hill crossed the plate on Szymczak’s ground out. Turano came home on a sacrifice fly by first baseman Sean Kelly (jr. North Bergen, NJ/North Bergen). The Profs scored one run in the fourth to increase the lead to four (5-1). McMenamin led off with a single. Magliaro drove him in with a double to left field.
Gwynedd-Mercy cut the deficit to three (5-2) with one run in the sixth. Martin singled and stole second. Elfreth ripped a single up the middle that knocked in Martin. In the seventh, Fagan got on base with a single and scored on an error to put Rowan ahead, 6-2. The Griffins rallied for two runs in the top of the ninth. Lynch reached base on an error and Martin singled. Burns’ double to center field plated Martin and Lynch.
Rowan hosts 20th ranked Neumann University in a nonconference game on Wednesday, March 28 at 4 p.m.
