Rowan Holds Off Haverford, 5-4

HAVERFORD, PA – The Rowan University baseball team held off a late rally to defeat Haverford College, 5-4 in a nonconference game on Friday afternoon.

The Profs improve to 12-4 on the season.  Rowan is ranked 12th in this week’s D3baseball.com/National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Top 25 Poll and 15th in the American Baseball Coaches Association/Collegiate Baseball Poll.  The Fords have a 7-10 record.

Left-hander Curtis Arsi (sr. Washington Twp., NJ/Westwood Reg.) earned the win.  Arsi (1-0) allowed three runs, one earned on nine hits in seven innings.  He registered six strikeouts.  Lefty Kyle Brown (jr. Southampton, NJ/Seneca) pitched one scoreless inning for his first save.  Right-hander Tommy Bergjans (fr. Manhattan Beach, CA/Loyola High) took the loss.  Bergjans (1-2) allowed five earned runs in 6.2 innings.

Rowan was led by second baseman Brandon Winkler (sr. Glendora, NJ/Paul VI) with two hits (three at bats), one RBI and one run scored.  Third baseman Kevin McMenamin (fr. Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) went two for two with two RBIs and one run scored.  Right fielder Matt Hill (sr. Hamilton Square, NJ/Robbinsville) and left fielder Mark Benak (so. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) both produced one hit and one RBI.  Shortstop Mark Magliaro (sr. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.), catcher Nick Turano (sr. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) and designated hitter Sean Kelly (jr. North Bergen, NJ/North Bergen) all tallied one hit and one run scored.  Magliaro and Kelly had one double apiece.

For Haverford, right fielder Matt Liscovitz (jr. Brunswick, MA/Brunswick) was three for four with two RBIs and a home run.  Designated hitter Justin Coulter (so. Bethesda, MD/St. Albans School) collected two hits (four at bats) and one run scored.  Third baseman Casey Fox (fr. Richmond, VA/St. Christopher’s School) and shortstop Clay Bloszies (fr. San Francisco, CA/International H.S.) each scored once.  Catcher Jeremy Zoll (sr. Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) and left fielder Alex Hudak (jr. Oyster Bay, NY/Oyster Bay) were both two for four.

The Fords took at 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.  Coulter singled to center field and later scored on an error.  The Profs went up 3-1 with one run in the second, third and fourth innings.  McMenamin singled in Turano in the second.  Hill’s RBI single in the third, plated Magliaro, who reached with a double.  McMenamin came home on a single through the right side by Winkler in the fourth.  Haverford cut the deficit to one (3-2) with one run in the bottom of the fourth.  Liscovitz ripped a single to left field and Fox scored.

The game was tied (3-3) after the Fords recorded one run in the fifth.  Bloszies reached first on an error.  He crossed the plate on a throwing error.  Rowan pulled ahead, 4-3 with one run in the sixth.  Kelly hit a leadoff double down the left field line.  He came in on McMenamin’s sacrifice fly to center field. 

The Profs added an insurance run in the seventh.  Winkler singled and stole second.  He moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Magliaro.  Benak’s sacrifice fly to left field allowed Winkler to score.  In the bottom of the ninth, Liscovitz hit a leadoff solo homer to left center field to bring Haverford within one (5-4), but the rally fell short.
