Szymczak's Single In The Bottom Of The Ninth Gives Rowan A 4-3 Win Over York

GLASSBORO, NJ – Pinch hitter C.J. Szymczak’s RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning gave Rowan University a 4-3 victory over York College (PA) in a nonconference game on Tuesday afternoon.

Rowan trailed, 3-2 after the top of the ninth inning.  Pinch hitter Nick Kreiger (fr. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) led off the bottom half with a walk.  Pinch hitter Rob Wilgus (sr. Woolwich, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) laid down a bunt single and Kreiger went to second.  The runners advanced to second and third on a sacrifice bunt.  Pinch hitter Kevin McMenamin (fr. Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) was intentionally walked to load the bases with one out.  Shortstop Marc Magliaro (sr. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) followed with a single through the right side that scored Kreiger.  Szymczak (jr. Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) ripped a single to right field and Wilgus came home.

The Profs improve to 11-3 on the season.  Rowan is ranked 12th in the D3baseball.com/National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Top 25 Poll and 15th in the American Baseball Coaches Association/Collegiate Baseball Poll.  The Spartans have a 5-11 record.

Right-hander Ryan Peterson (sr. Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery) earned the win in relief.  Peterson (2-1) tossed two shutout innings.  Righty KC Beshore (sr. New Cumberland, PA/Red Land) took the loss.  He (0-2) allowed two earned runs on three hits in 2.1 innings.

Profs’ first baseman Casey Grimes (fr. Gibbstown, NJ/Paulsboro) went two for three with one run scored.  Magliaro tallied one hit (five at bats), one RBI and one run scored.  Designated hitter Danny Lang (jr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) chipped in with a double and one RBI.  Left fielder Eric Perez (so. Hopelawn, NJ/Woodbridge) collected one RBI.

For York, designated hitter Derek Pitzer (fr. York, PA/Dallastown) totaled three hits (four at bats), one run scored and a double.  Catcher Colbe Herr (so. Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) added one hit (three at bats) and two runs scored.  First baseman Nic Long (jr. North Wildwood, NJ/Wildwood Catholic) was two for two with one RBI.  Shortstop Colin Porter (so. Hanover, PA/South Western) drove in one run.

The Spartans went ahead, 2-0 in the top of the second inning.  Porter’s sacrifice fly with the bases loaded plated Pitzer.  Herr, who got on base with a bunt single, came home on an error.  Rowan cut the deficit to one (2-1) with one run in the bottom half.  Grimes singled up the middle.  He scored when Perez hit a sacrifice fly to right field.

York added one run in the fourth.  Herr reached on an error.  Long drove him in with a single down the left field line.  Rowan came within one (3-2) after scoring one run in the fifth.  Magliaro hit into a fielder’s choice.  He crossed the plate on a double to left center field by Lang.

Rowan travels to Alvernia University for a nonconference game on Wednesday, March 21 at 3:30 p.m.
