LAGRANGE, GA – The Rowan University baseball team improved to 10-0 with a 16-5 victory over The College of Wooster on Monday. The game was played at LaGrange College.
The Profs are off their best start since 2005, when they began the year with 19 straight wins. Rowan is ranked 13th in the latest D3baseball.com/National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Top 25 Poll. The Fighting Scots have a 1-1 record.
Left-hander Kyle Brown (jr. Southampton, NJ/Seneca) earned the win in relief. He (1-0) only surrendered one hit in 1.1 innings. Right-hander Bobby Kruse (fr. Ocean, NJ/Ocean Twp.) pitched 4.2 innings in his first start of the season. He allowed two runs, one earned on five hits. Righty Kyle Cunningham-Rhoads (sr. Kalamazoo, MI/Kalamazoo Central) took the loss. He (0-1) gave up five earned runs on eight hits in 4.2 innings.
Catcher Nick Turano (sr. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) led the Profs with two hits (five at bats), three RBIs, three runs scored and a home run. Right fielder Matt Hill (sr. Hamilton Square, NJ/Robbinsville) went two for two with four runs scored and one RBI. Center fielder Felix Colarte (sr. North Bergen, NJ/North Bergen) posted two hits (four at bats), three RBIs, one run scored and a double. First baseman Sean Kelly (jr. North Bergen, NJ/North Bergen) added one hit (three at bats), two RBIs and two runs scored. Third baseman Mark Benak (so. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) produced two hits (four at bats) and two runs scored.
Shortstop Marc Magliaro (sr. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) was one for five with two RBIs. Second baseman Brandon Winkler (sr. Glendora, NJ/Paul VI) chipped in with one hit (two at bats), two RBIs and one run scored. Pinch hitter/left fielder Eric Perez (so. Hopelawn, NJ/Woodbridge) posted one hit (two at bats), one RBI and one run scored. Designated hitter Kevin McMenamin (fr. Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) had a double (three at bats) and one RBI. Pinch hitters Danny Lang (jr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) and Rich Fagan (jr. Nutley, NJ/St. Benedict’s Prep) each scored once.
For the Fighting Scots, right fielder Zac Mathie (so. Millersburg, OH/West Holmes) compiled two hits (four at bats), one RBI, one run scored and a triple. Center fielder Jarrod Mancine (so. Sarver, PA/Freeport Area) and shortstop Eddie Reese (so. Canfield, OH/Cardinal Mooney) collected two hits and one run scored apiece. Third baseman Craig Day (so. Holmesville, OH/Waynedale) and left fielder Johnathan Ray (jr. Columbus, OH/Grandview Heights) each tallied one hit (three at bats) and one run scored. Pinch hitter Jake Zeek (fr. Dalton, OH/Dalton) was one for one with one RBI.
Wooster took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Mathie hit a triple to right center field and Day scored. Rowan tied the game (1-1) in the second. Winkler singled up the middle allowing Kelly to score. The Profs added two runs in the third. Kelly and Colarte both had RBI singles.
Rowan recorded two runs in the top of the fifth. Hill walked and later scored on a ground out. McMenamin drove in Turano with a double to left center field. In the bottom half, the Fighting Scots got one run to pull within three (5-2). Mancine reached base with a single and he came home on an error. The Profs broke the game open with eight runs in the sixth for a 13-2 advantage. Benak crossed the plate on an error. Colarte had a two run double and Winkler was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded bringing Kelly home. Colarte scored on Perez’s walk. Magliaro knocked in two runs with a single and Hill’s sacrifice fly allowed Perez to come in.
Both teams got three runs in the eighth. In the top half, Turano hit a three run homer over the left field fence. Pinch hitter Billy Farrow (so. Evanston, IL/Evanston Twp.) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the inning and Reese came home. Mathie crossed the plate on a groundout and Zeek singled in Ray.
Rowan travels to 10th ranked Piedmont College on Thursday, March 15 for a 7 p.m. game.
