LAGRANGE, GA – The Rowan University baseball team had a 5-2 victory over LaGrange College on its spring break trip on Sunday evening.
The Profs, ranked 13th in this week’s D3baseball.com/National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Top 25 Poll, are unbeaten with a 9-0 record. It is Rowan’s best start since the 2006 season, in which it won its first eight games. The Panthers have a 6-12 mark.
Right-hander Andrew Lysy (fr. Allentown, NJ/Allentown) was the winning pitcher. He (3-0) tossed 6.2 innings, allowing one earned run on four hits. Righty Ryan Peterson (sr. Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery) threw the final 0.2 innings for his third save. Right-hander Mason Webster (jr. Hop Bottom, PA/Mountain View) took the loss. He (2-2) surrendered two earned runs on six hits in seven innings.
Rowan was led by shortstop Marc Magliaro (sr. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) with three hits (five at bats), one RBI and two runs scored. First baseman Matt Hill (sr. Hamilton Square, NJ/Robbinsville) went two for five with two RBIs, one run scored and a double. Catcher Nick Turano (sr. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) posted three hits (four at bats) and one RBI. First baseman Sean Kelly (jr. North Bergen, NJ/North Bergen) contributed with one hit (three at bats) and one RBI. Pinch hitter Brandon Winkler (sr. Glendora, NJ/Paul VI) and center fielder Felix Colarte (sr. North Bergen, NJ/North Bergen) each scored once.
For LaGrange, shortstop Cody Muren (jr. Jacksonville, FL/Episcopal) and left fielder James Hall (jr. Hawkinsville, GA/Hawkinsville) both registered one hit (three at bats) and one run scored. Second baseman Brent Kinsey (jr. Thomasville, GA/Brookwood) drove in one run. Right fielder Jon Brock (jr. Dawson, GA/Terrell Academy) and center fielder Brandon Espinosa (jr. Montverde, FL/East Ridge) added one hit apiece.
Rowan went ahead, 1-0 in the top of the first inning. With one out and the bases loaded, Kelly grounded out allowing Magliaro to score from third. LaGrange tied the game (1-1) with one run in the third. Hall hit a leadoff single to center field and he later scored on a passed ball. The Profs regained the lead, 2-1 with one run in the fourth. Magliaro drove in Colarte with an infield single.
In the top of the eighth, Rowan rallied for three runs to push the advantage to 5-1. With two outs, Malgliaro singled to right field. Winkler followed with a walk. Hill ripped a double to right center field allowing Magliaro and Winkler to score. Turano followed with a single to left center that brought Hill home. The Panthers recorded one run in the bottom of the ninth. Muren walked and went to second on a passed ball. He advanced to third on a wild pitch. Kinsey hit a sacrifice fly to center field and Muren crossed the plate.
Rowan faces The College of Wooster on Monday, March 12 at 10 a.m. The game will be played at LaGrange.
