ASHLAND, VA – The Rowan University baseball team swept a doubleheader at Randolph-Macon College Sunday. The Profs won the first game 13-12 in nine innings and took the second, 10-1 in seven innings.
Rowan improves to 3-0 on the season, while Randolph-Macon has a 2-5-1 record. In the first game, the score was tied 12-12 after eight innings. In the top of the ninth, Profs’ right fielder Nick Kreiger (fr. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) singled with one out. First baseman Matt Hill (sr. Hamilton Square, NJ/Robbinsville) followed with a single to right center field and Kreiger went to third. After a pop up, catcher Nick Turano (sr. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) ripped a single up the middle that plated Kreiger.
Right hander Brian Rice (jr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic) earned the win (1-0) in relief. He tossed 2.2 scoreless innings. Lefty Curtis Arsi (sr. Washington Twp., NJ/Westwood Reg.) started the game, allowing two earned runs in four innings. Right-hander JT Williamson (fr. Springfield, VA/West Springfield) took the loss (0-1) for the Yellow Jackets. He was on the mound for the final two innings and surrendered one run on three hits.
Turano went three for six with four RBIs, two runs scored, a double and a home run. Center fielder Scott Bruno (so. Middletown, NJ/Middletown S.) posted two hits (four at bats), two RBIs and one run scored. Hill registered two hits (five at bats), two RBIs and one run scored. Third baseman Danny Lang (jr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) was three for three with two runs scored, one RBI and a double.
Shortstop Marc Magliaro (sr. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) compiled two hits (six at bats), one RBI and one run scored. First baseman Sean Kelly (jr. North Bergen, NJ/North Bergen) chipped in with one hit (three at bats), two runs scored, one RBI and a double. Designated hitter C.J. Szymczak (jr. Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) added one hit (two at bats), one RBI and one run scored. Second basemen Rob Wilgus (sr. Woolwich, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) and Brandon Winkler (sr. Glendora, NJ/Paul VI) each scored once.
For Randolph-Macon, center fielder Brian Jordan (sr. Columbia, VA/Goochland) recorded three hits (six at bats), two RBIs and one run scored. Shortstop Jake Fletcher (jr. Deltaville, VA/Middlesex) went two for six with one RBI, one run scored and a double. First baseman Jon Witt (jr. Chesterfield, VA/Trinity Episcopal) collected two hits (four at bats), three RBIs and a home run. Right fielder Jordan Walton (sr. Mechanicsville, VA/Lee-Davis) produced two hits in four trips to the plate, one RBI, one run scored and a double.
Catcher Matt Musser (sr. Mechanicsville, VA/Lee-Davis) went two for five with two RBIs, one run scored and a triple. Second baseman Austin Carpenter (jr. Richmond, VA/Steward) chipped in with one hit in four at bats, two runs scored and one RBI. Third baseman Macon Heikes (so. Williamsburg, VA/Lafayette) contributed with two hits (six at bats) and one run scored. Left fielder Zach Broaddus (fr. Mechanicsville, VA/Hanover) and designated hitter Tim Benjamin (fr. Baltimore, MD/Glenelg) both crossed the plate twice.
Rowan took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Turano reached base on a double and he moved to third on Szymczak’s single. Turano came home on a single by Bruno and Wilgus’ ground out knocked Szymczak in. The Profs added three runs in the top of the third on a three-run homer by Turano. The Yellow Jackets got on the scoreboard with one run in the bottom half. Fletcher singled in Carpenter.
In the top of the fourth, Wilgus reached base on an error. He scored on a double by Lang for a 6-1 advantage. Randolph-Macon cut the deficit to two (6-4) with three runs in the bottom half. Benjamin got on with an error. He moved to second on Heikes’ single. Benjamin crossed the plate when Broaddus reached first on an error. Musser followed with a triple to right center, driving in two runs. Kelly led off the fifth with a double down the right field line. He advanced to second on a fly out and scored when Szymczak lined out to left field.
The Yellow Jackets pulled ahead, 12-7 after registering eight runs in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Witt hit a solo homer to left field. Carpenter walked with the bases loaded bringing Benjamin home. Jordan followed with a single to left center that knocked in Broaddus and Musser. Carpenter came in when Fletcher reached base on an error. Walton’s single to right center field drove in Jordan. Witt singled in Walton and Fletcher. Rowan tied the game (12-12) with five runs in the sixth. Bruno and Winkler drew walks to start the inning. Magliaro’s single up the middle brought in Bruno. Lang walked to load the bases with no outs. Hill ripped a single up the middle and Winkler and Magliaro came in. Lang crossed the plate on Kelly’s sacrifice fly to left field. Bruno hit a single with the bases loaded and Hill scored.
In the nightcap, right-hander Andrew Lysy (fr. Allentown, NJ/Allentown) threw five innings, allowing one run on nine hits for the win (1-0). It was his first collegiate start. Righty Michael Helbig (jr. Midlothian, VA/Midlothian) took the loss (0-1). He gave up three earned runs in three innings.
Lang compiled two hits (three at bats), three runs scored and one RBI. Magliaro was two for four with two runs scored and a double. Kelly had one hit (three at bats) and two RBIs. Hill produced one hit (four at bats), two runs scored and one RBI. Turano went two for three with two RBIs, while Szymczak posted one hit (two at bats), one RBI and one run scored. Winkler and Kreiger both registered one hit (three at bats) and one RBI. Pinch hitter Rich Fagan (jr. Nutley, NJ/St. Benedict’s Prep) and left fielder Eric Perez (so. Hopelawn, NJ/Woodbridge) each scored once.
For the Yellow Jackets, Broaddus went three for three. Walton tallied two hits (four at bats), while Witt and Carpenter added two hits (three at bats) apiece. Benjamin had one hit (three at bats) and one run scored. Heikes collected one RBI.
Rowan scored three runs in the top of the first inning. Magliaro singled to right field and moved to second on a passed ball. He advanced to first on a wild pitch and came home on Lang’s single up the middle. Hill followed with a walk. The runners went to second and third on a throwing error. Kelly’s ground out plated Lang and Turano drove in Hill with a single to right field. Randolph-Macon came within two (3-1) with one run in the second. Benjamin hit a leadoff single and stole second. He scored on Heikes’ ground out.
Lang started the third inning with a walk. He stole second and crossed the plate on Kelly’s single through the right side. The Profs tacked on four runs in the sixth to go up 8-1. Magliaro doubled to right center field. He advanced to third on a single by Lang. Hill followed with a base hit to right field that knocked in Magliaro. Lang came home on a throwing error. Turano’s sacrifice fly to left field allowed Hill to score from third. Kreiger walked with the bases loaded and Szymczak crossed the plate. In the seventh, Szymczak was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, bringing in Fagan, who reached base on a single. Perez scored on a fielder’s choice with Winkler at bat.
Rowan hosts Valley Forge Christian College in its home opener on Thursday, March 1 at 3 p.m.
