Rowan Wins Season Opener, 12-8 Over Randolph-Macon

ASHLAND, VA – The Rowan University baseball team opened the 2012 season with a 12-8 win over Randolph-Macon College on Saturday.

Profs’ right-hander Steven Melchiorre (jr. Atco, NJ/Hammonton) earned the win.  He tossed five innings, allowing four earned runs.  Righty Christian Rahman (jr. Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) pitched two scoreless innings for the save.  Left-hander Jamie Hendrick (jr. Richmond, VA/L.C. Bird) took the loss (1-1) for the Yellow Jackets.  He surrendered nine earned runs in five innings.

Rowan shortstop Marc Magliaro (sr. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) went four for six with two RBIs, two runs scored and a triple.  Catcher Nick Turano (sr. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) posted three hits (six at bats), three RBIs, one run scored and a double.  Third baseman Danny Lang (jr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) contributed with three hits in three at bats, two runs scored, one RBI and a double.  First baseman Matt Hill (sr. Hamilton Square, NJ/Robbinsville) was two for four with three RBIs and a home run.  Second baseman Brandon Winkler (sr. Glendora, NJ/Paul VI) chipped in with two hits (three at bats), two runs scored, one RBI and a double.

Third baseman Kevin McMenamin (fr. Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) went two for two with one RBI, one run scored and a double.  Left fielder Eric Perez (so. Hopelawn, NJ/Woodbridge) registered three hits in six at bats and one run scored.  Right fielder Nate Floyd (jr. Erial, NJ/Timber Creek Reg.) added two hits (five at bats) and one run scored.  Center fielder Felix Colarte (sr. North Bergen, NJ/North Bergen) was one for four with one RBI, while designated hitter Scott Bruno (so. Middletown, NJ/Middletown S.) scored once.

For Randolph-Macon (2-3-1), right fielder Jordan Walton (sr. Mechanicsville, VA/Lee-Davis) collected two hits (four at bats), three RBIs and a homer.  Center fielder Brian Jordan (sr. Columbia, VA/Goochland) was two for four with runs scored.  Shortstop Jake Fletcher (jr. Deltaville, VA/Middlesex) produced one hit (three at bats), two RBIs and one run scored.  Third baseman Macon Heikes (so. Williamsburg, VA/Lafayette) had two hits (four at bats) and one run scored.  Left fielder Zach Broaddus (fr. Mechanicsville, VA/Hanover) added a double and one RBI.  First baseman Jon Witt (jr. Chesterfield, VA/Trinity Episcopal) and catcher Matt Musser (sr. Mechanicsville, VA/Lee-Davis) each drove in one run run, while second baseman Austin Carpenter (jr. Richmond, VA/Steward) scored once.

The Profs took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.  With one out, Lang walked.  He went to second on Turano’s single.  Lang advanced to third on a fly out and crossed the plate on a single by Colarte.  Hill’s single to left field knocked in Turano.  Rowan tacked on three runs in the second to go up, 5-0.  Winkler doubled and went to third on a wild pitch.  Magliaro singled to center field and Winkler came home.  After Magliaro stole second, Lang drove him in with a double.  Lang advanced to third on an error and scored on Turano’s ground out.

In the bottom of the second, Randolph-Macon recorded two runs.  Designated hitter Tim Benjamin (fr. Baltimore, MD/Glenelg) and Heikes had back-to-back singles.  Broaddus followed with a doubled that plated Benjamin.  Musser’s sacrifice fly drove in Heikes.  The Yellow Jackets cut the deficit to two (5-3) with one run in the third.  Fletcher was hit by a pitch and he moved to third on Walton’s single.  Witt flied out to left field and Fletcher came home.

The Profs added four runs in the top of the fifth (9-3).  With one out, Hill hit a solo homer to right field.  Perez and Floyd each recorded a single.  Winkler’s single to right field brought in Perez.  Magliaro knocked in Floyd with an infield single.  Winkler crossed the plate on Turano’s ground out.  In the bottom half, Jordan singled and advanced to second on an error.  Fletcher followed with a RBI single down the right field line.

In the bottom of the seventh, Musser and Carpenter both singled and Jordan walked to load the bases.  Fletcher’s sacrifice fly to right field allowed Musser to score.  Walton followed with a three run shot to bring the Yellow Jackets within one (9-8).  Rowan sealed the victory with one run in the eighth and two in the ninth.  Hill grounded out and Bruno came home in the eighth.  Magliaro led off the ninth with a triple to right center field.  McMenamin ripped a double and Magliaro scored.  Turano’s RBI double down the left field line plated McMenamin.

The two teams meet again on Sunday, February 26 for a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m.  The first game is nine innings and the second will be seven.
