GALLOWAY, NJ – The Rowan University women’s basketball team defeated Richard Stockton College, 67-52 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Saturday afternoon.
Rowan improves to 9-15 overall and 3-9 in the conference. Richard Stockton has a 14-10 record with a 4-8 NJAC mark. The Profs were led by center Kate Matthews (fr. Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) with 18 points and a season-high 14 rebounds. Forward Lauren Gregg (sr. Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood) posted 13 points, nine boards and five blocked shots. Guard Kaitlin Schullstrom (fr. Colts Neck, NJ/Colts Neck) contributed with 12 points and a career best 12 rebounds. Guard Chanelle Banta (sr. Bergenfield, NJ/Bergenfield) grabbed seven rebounds. Guard Alissa Lamey (sr. Northfield, NJ/Mainland Reg.) totaled seven points, six rebounds, six assists and four steals. She broke the University’s career assist mark of 433 by Sheemea Carr (2002-06). In four seasons, Lamey has compiled 435 assists.
For the Ospreys, forward Lauren Alwan (so. Winslow, NJ/Timber Creek Reg.) registered 13 points, 11 rebounds and five steals. Center LaTonya Oliver (sr. West Berlin, NJ/Overbrook) compiled 11 points, 13 boards and eight blocks. Guards Aliyah Nelson (sr. Pleasantville, NJ/St. Joseph) and Brittany Muniz (fr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill E.) chipped in with eight and seven points respectively. Muniz also pulled down seven rebounds, while guard Che’Na Thompson (jr. Salem, NJ/Salem) had six.
Rowan was ahead, 28-20 at halftime. Matthews’ jumper at 18:40 in the second period extended the advantage to 10 points (30-20). Nelson and Oliver had back-to-back layups at 18:28 and 17:59 respectively. Alwan added a free throw at 17:12 and the Ospreys trailed by five (30-25). At 15:32, Alwan had a layup to cut the deficit to three (32-29). The Profs were up, 36-32 following a basket by Oliver at 13:28. Schullstrom sunk two free throws (13:00) and Matthews hit one (12:35) to push the lead to seven (39-32). Gregg’s layup (10:50) and two foul shots by Matthews (8:52) put Rowan on top, 45-35.
Alwan’s jumper at 8:36 brought Richard Stockton within eight (45-37). Rowan scored the next six points for a 14 point lead (51-37) with 6:50 remaining. Matthews collected five points and Banta had one. The Profs were ahead, 59-48 with 2:02 left after two free throws by Matthews. Muniz made a jumper (1:54) and Thompson converted one of two foul shots (1:40) to bring the Ospreys within eight (59-51). Guard Ashley Waring (sr. Pennsauken, NJ/Pennsauken) recorded six consecutive points to go up by 14 (65-61) with 58 seconds on the clock. Alwan connected on a foul shot at :48, but Schullstrom’s two free throws at :29 ended the scoring.
The Ospreys held a one point advantage (10-9) at 11:24 in the first half. The Profs went on an 8-0 run to take a 17-10 lead. Lamey and Gregg each hit a three-pointer and Schullstrom had two free throws. Richard Stockton pulled within four (19-15) after one foul shot by Oliver (8:32) and two by Alwan (8:16). Rowan scored the next six points to go up, 25-15 at 5:05. Schullstrom registered four points and Gregg had two.
Guard Sarah Gibbs (jr. Ocean View, NJ/Ocean City) sunk a three-pointer (2:54) and two foul shots (2:36) to cut the deficit to five (25-20). Banta hit a free throw (2:00) and forward Erin Farrell (jr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) followed with a layup (:46) to give Rowan a 28-20 lead at the intermission.
Rowan hosts NJAC opponent Rutgers-Camden in the regular season finale on Wednesday, February 15 at 6 p.m.
