Richard Stockton Hangs On For 80-77 Win Over Rowan

GALLOWAY, NJ – The Richard Stockton College men’s basketball team held on for an 80-77 win over New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) opponent Rowan University on Saturday.

The Ospreys are 17-7 overall and 11-1 in the conference.  The Profs have an 11-13 record with a 4-8 NJAC mark.  Richard Stockton had four players in double figures.  Forward DiAndre Brown (sr. Sicklerville, NJ/Camden County Tech) led the way with 22 points.  Guard Darnell McCargo (jr. Woodlynne, NJ/Collingswood) recorded a double-double with 21 points and 13 rebounds.  Guard Ibn Moye (so. Toms River, NJ/Central Reg.) came off the bench for 15 points and six boards.  Forward Bill McDonough (jr. Spring Lake, NJ/St. Rose) chipped in with 14 points and eight rebounds.

For Rowan, guard Phil Jackson (so. Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) produced career-highs of 25 points and eight rebounds.  Guard Rich McNamara (so. Southampton, NJ/Seneca) contributed with 20 points while guards Jason Rosenberg (so. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) and Kendall White (jr. Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) each added 10 points.  Rosenberg also dished eight assists.  Center Dee Benson (so. Somerdale, NJ/Sterling) grabbed six boards.

With 2:44 remaining in the game, Richard Stockton had a 10-point lead (78-68) after two foul shots by guard Dave Williams (jr. Pennsauken, NJ/Pennsauken).  The Profs answered with seven straight points to pull within three (78-75) at 1:23.  Jackson hit a three and White followed with two free throws while McNamara had a layup.  Brown converted two fouls shots at the 30 second mark to go up by five (80-75).  White’s layup with 19 seconds left cut the deficit to three (80-77).  Rowan missed a three-pointer as time expired which would have tied the game.  Brown scored 17 points in the second half while Jackson registered 14.

The Ospreys started the second period with a one-point lead (31-30).  Brown’s jumper at 18:57 made the score 33-32.  The Profs went up 37-33 after a three-pointer (18:40) from McNamara and two free throws (18:25) by Jackson.  Rosenberg’s jumper at 16:59 gave Rowan a five-point advantage (43-38).  Richard Stockton pulled within one (43-42) with a foul shot by McDonough.  His free throw at 13:52 tied the score (48-48).  Jackson put Rowan up 51-48 with a three-pointer (13:35).  At 12:16, Brown made a layup and a foul shot, tying the game at 54.  McCargo added a basket (11:50) and Moye had two free throws (11:06) to take the lead (58-54).  Rosenberg’s jumper knotted the game at 65 with 5:49 remaining.  The Ospreys went back up by 11 (76-65) at 2:58 after Brown’s three.

There were four ties in the first half.  With 5:38 on the clock, McCargo had a layup to lead by four points (22-18).  Rowan tied the score with a layup (5:30) by Rosenberg and two free throws from McNamara (4:50).  Richard Stockton answered with a 9-0 run for a nine-point (31-22) advantage at 2:11.  McDonough contributed with four while Moye and McCargo added three and two respectively.  The Profs ended the period with eight straight points to trail by one (31-30).  Jackson had a dunk (1:20) and guard Matt Whitworth (so. Ocean City, NJ/Ocean City) drained a three (0:49).  At the buzzer, Jackson was fouled and the layup was good.  He then made the foul shot.       

Next week, Rowan ends the regular season with a home game against Rutgers-Camden on Wednesday, February 15 at 8 p.m.
