EWING, NJ – The College of New Jersey women’s basketball team defeated Rowan University, 70-41 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Wednesday night.
The Lions are 6-2 overall and 4-1 in the conference. The Profs have a 3-6 record with a 0-5 NJAC mark. Forward/center Liz West (jr. Monmouth Beach, NJ/Shore Reg.) led TCNJ with 12 points off the bench. Guards Kelly Roddy (jr. Belmar, NJ/St. Rose), Tiffany DeTulio (jr. Colts Neck, NJ/Colts Neck) and Angelica Esposito (fr. Lincroft, NJ/St. John Vianney) and center/forward Candace Vigo (sr. New Brunswick, NJ/New Brunswick Health Science Tech) all contributed with seven points. Vigo grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds and Roddy dished five assists. Guard Kelly Coughlin (so. Trumbull, CT/Trumbull) and center Cari Winiarski (fr. Voorhees, NJ/Eastern Reg.) added six points apiece.
For Rowan, guard Alexis Govan (jr. Bridgeton NJ/Camden City Technical Schools) totaled 10 points and seven rebounds. Guard Eyandra Molina (sr. Pleasantville, NJ/Washington Irving (NY)) followed with nine points and guard Bria Hill (so. Atlantic City, NJ/Atlantic City) had seven. Center Kate Matthews (so. Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) collected eight rebounds.
In the first half, the Profs trailed by one (10-9) at 13:09 after two foul shots by Govan. TCNJ had an 8-0 spurt in a four minute span to lead by nine (18-9). Forward Jessica Goldbach (so. Edison, NJ/John P. Stevens) had a layup while DeTulio and Roddy each hit a three-pointer. Govan sank a free throw at 7:04 and Rowan trailed by six (20-14). The Lions scored 10 straight points to increase its lead to 16 (30-14) with 1:54 left. West produced six points and Goldbach and Esposito each had two. With nine seconds on the clock, Vigo’s jumper ended the half and TCNJ was ahead 35-16.
At 14:48 in the second stanza, TCNJ had a 19 point advantage (39-20). The Lions pulled away with a 9-0 run to lead 48-20 at 12:57. Guard Colleen Duffy’s (jr. Spotswood, NJ/Spotswood) three (12:23) put the Lions up by 29 (51-22). Winiarski had a layup (6:19) and TCNJ had its biggest lead of the game, 33 points (61-28).
