Rowan Field Hockey Falls To Rochester, 2-0 In First Round Of NCAA Tournament

ROCHESTER, NY – The Rowan University field hockey team lost to the University of Rochester, 2-0 in the first round of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament on Wednesday. 

Rochester (17-5) advances to the second round at Salisbury University (15-2) on Saturday, November 10 at 11 a.m.  The winner of the first round game between Christopher Newport University (16-1) and Gwynedd-Mercy College (15-5) plays Montclair State University (19-1) on Saturday at 1 p.m. 

The two winners meet in the third round on Sunday, November 11 at 1 p.m.  Salisbury is the host for the second and third round contests.  The national semifinals and final are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, November 17 and 18 at William Smith College in Geneva, NY. 

Rowan ends the season with a 15-7 record.  The Profs received an at-large bid to the national tournament.  It was Rowan’s 18th appearance and first since 2009.  This is Rochester’s first time in the NCAA postseason.     

The Yellowjackets scored twice in the first half.  Forward Michelle Relin (fr. Lititz, PA/Manheim Twp.) had the first goal at 14:05.  She tipped in a cross from the right side by forward Shelby Hall (sr. Hamburg, NY/Hamburg).  It was Relin’s 18th goal on the season.  At 21:10, midfielder Megan Keil (so. Syracuse, NY/Camden) hit the cage with an assist from Relin. 

Rochester totaled 19 shots while Rowan had 10.  Goalie Madison Wagner (jr. Cheswick, PA/Fox Chapel) made fives for her fourth shutout.  Profs’ goalie Jen Goldberg (sr. Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) stopped 10 shots.

There were 24 teams at the start of the NCAA field hockey championship tournament.  Rowan and Rochester both received bids from Pool C, which includes institutions from automatic qualifying conferences.  There were six teams selected from Pool C, 17 squads from conferences with automatic qualifications for the championships and one team from Pool B that consists of independent institutions.
