Field Hockey Defeats The College of New Jersey, 4-3 In NJAC Semifinals

GLASSBORO, NJ  – The Rowan University field hockey team defeated The College of New Jersey, 4-3 in the semifinals of the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Championship Tournament.

Forward Kellie Campbell (so. Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) scored the winning goal on a penalty stroke at 48:26.  She ended the game with three goals.  Rowan (15-5), the second seed, will play at the top seed Montclair State University (18-1) in the conference final on Sunday, November 4 at 4 p.m.  MSU advanced with a 6-1 win over the fourth seed William Paterson University.  The NJAC champion receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.

In this week’s NCAA South Atlantic Region Rankings, Montclair State is first while Rowan is third followed by TCNJ fourth.  The Lions are 15-5 overall.  The pairings for the national field hockey tournament are scheduled to be released on Sunday night (Nov. 4).

Rowan jumped out to a 2-0 lead with goals by forward/midfielder Jenna O’Sullivan (so. Sicklerville, NJ/Timber Creek Reg.) and Campbell.  Sullivan scored from eight yards at 2:15 with an assist from midfielder Marisa Marini (fr. Carneys Point, NJ/Padua Academy (DE)).  Campbell had a shot from inside the circle at 5:45, which went into the right side of the Lions’ cage.

At 11:30, TCNJ had its first goal.  The Lions had a penalty corner and scored but the goal was disallowed.  After the officials had a discussion, it was declared an own goal.  Midfielder Camille Passucci (sr. Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls) tied the score at 28:31.  She knocked in a loose ball during a scramble in front of the Profs’ cage.  Campbell made the score 3-2 (30:48) when she tapped in a pass by Marini.  Forward Jordan Calderone (fr. Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood) knotted the score at three with 2:05 left in the first half.  She scored on a rebound after her first shot was saved by goalie Jen Goldberg (sr. Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson). 

TCNJ totaled 13 shots and Rowan took nine.  Goldberg stopped six shots.  For the Lions, goalie Roisin Dougherty (fr. Ocean City, NJ/Ocean City) made one save.
