FROSTBURG, MD – The Rowan University women’s basketball defeated Albright College, 70-61 to win the 10th Annual Jim Crawley Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday evening.
The Profs improve to 2-0, while the Lions have a 1-1 record. Earlier on Saturday, host Frostburg State University topped Immaculata University, 56-49 in the consolation game. In the first round on Friday night, Rowan had a 62-56 win over Frostburg and Albright beat Immaculata, 69-55.
Rowan was led by center Kate Matthews (so. Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Guard Bria Hill (so. Atlantic City, NJ/Atlantic City) registered 17 points and guard Eyandra Molina (sr. Pleasantville, NJ/Washington Irving (NY)) had 12. Guard Jade Bonder (so. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) totaled 14 points, seven assists and four steals. Forward Erin Farrell (sr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) added five points and six boards.
For Albright, guard Kari Ludy (sr. Pottstown, PA/Pottsgrove) compiled 12 points and guard Tara Sabotchick (so. Shamokin, PA/Shamokin) followed with 11. Forward Kalecia Harris (fr. Blakeslee, PA/Pleasant Valley), center Meghan Boyle (jr. Monson, MA/Monson) and forward Kadijah Bishop (fr. Lancaster, PA/J.P. McCasskey) all scored 10 points. Bishop grabbed 10 rebounds, Harris had nine and Boyle pulled down eight.
Matthews was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. The All-Tournament Team consisted of Chrissy Esbensen (Immaculata), Elaina Hummel (Frostburg State), Hill and Sabotchick.
Sabotchick’s jumper at 16:42 in the first half gave Albright a 9-7 lead. Rowan went on a 12-4 run to go ahead by six (19-13) at 13:01. Bonder nailed two three-pointers, Hill made two jumpers and Matthews had a layup. Boyle brought the Lions within four (21-17) with a basket at 11:30.
The Profs pulled away with a 12-2 surge to make the score, 33-19 at 6:27. Center Stephanie Kraus (sr. Franklinville, NJ/Delsea Reg.) and Hill each sunk a three-pointer, Molina had four free throws and Matthews added two. At 1:56, Albright came within 10 (35-25) following two foul shots by guard Kristi McFadden (jr. Thorndale, PA/Coatesville). Farrell’s jumper with 20 seconds left gave Rowan a 39-26 halftime advantage. Bonder and Hill both tallied nine points in the first and Matthews had eight. For the Lions, Boyle compiled 10 points and six rebounds and Sabtochick scored eight points.
Rowan’s largest lead of the game was 16 points (49-33) after a layup by Hill. Albright answered with a 9-0 run to come within seven (49-42). Ludy tallied five points, while Harris and Bishop each had two. Molina had back-to-back jumpers at 12:06 and 11:27 to make the score, 53-42. The Lions recorded the next eight points to cut the deficit to three (53-50) at 7:41. Bishop collected four points and Harris and Ludy both had a layup.
Matthews (5:43) and Hill (5:04) each made a basket to put Rowan on top, 57-50. The lead was nine points (61-52) following Bonder’s layup at 4:18. Sabotchick nailed a three-pointer at 3:14 but Hill had a jumper at 2:48 to make the score, 63-55. Ludy had a basket at 1:11 to bring the Lions within six (65-59). Bonder (:53) and Molina (:31) both made two foul shots to push the lead to 10 (69-59). Bonder added a free throw at :16. Harris’ layup with eight seconds remaining ended the scoring.
Rowan hosts conference opponent Montclair State University in its home opener on Tuesday, November 20 at 6 p.m.
