NEWARK, NJ – Midfielder Gabiel Avans scored the game-winning goal to give Rutgers-Newark a 1-0 victory over Rowan University in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Saturday.

The Scarlet Raiders improve to 11-5 overall and 4-3-1 in the conference.  The Profs have a 6-7-2 record with a 1-4-1 NJAC mark.  Avans (sr. Roselle Park, NJ/Union Catholic) converted a penalty kick at 68:10 in the second period.

Rowan took 15 shots, while Rutgers-Newark had 12.  Scarlet Raiders’ goalkeeper Matt Broomall (fr. Somers Point, NJ/Mainland Reg.) made 10 saves for his seventh shutout of the season.  Profs’ goalkeeper Michael Fanz-Huster (sr. Waterford, NJ/Hammonton) stopped three shots.

The Profs travel to NJAC opponent New Jersey City University on Wednesday, October 17 at 3 p.m.
