NEWARK, NJ – The Rutgers-Newark women’s basketball team defeated visiting Rowan University, 62-52 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Saturday night.
The Scarlet Raiders are 12-4 overall and 3-2 in the conference. The Profs have a 6-9 record with a 1-4 NJAC mark. Guard ShaQuanna Marshall (so. Paterson, NJ/Paterson Catholic) led Rutgers-Newark with 19 points. Forward Jade Howard (fr. Sicklerville, NJ/St. Joseph’s (Hammonton)) and guard Kendra Johnson (sr. Eastampton, NJ/Lenape) each contributed with 10 points. Forward Lori Nieves (sr. North Plainfield, NJ/North Plainfield) added eight points and five rebounds. Guard Jasmine Daniels (so. Lodi, NJ/Lodi) chipped in with seven points and six boards. Center Sharee Gordon (fr. Newark, NJ/University) grabbed a game-high seven rebounds.
For Rowan, forward Lauren Gregg (sr. Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood) totaled 14 points and six rebounds. Forward Erin Farrell (jr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) followed with 13 points and five boards. Forward Lauren Creel (sr. Pennsauken, NJ/Pennsauken) scored 11 points.
The Scarlet Raiders started the second half with a six-point lead (34-28). Nieves’ jumper at 14:33 increased the margin to 14 points (50-36). Rowan trailed 52-38 with 12:02 remaining. The Profs went on an 8-0 run to pull within six (52-46) at 9:38. Guard Chanelle Banta (sr. Bergenfield, NJ/Bergenfield) produced four points in the surge while Gregg and Farrell had two apiece. Daniels made two foul shots (8:53) and Johnson had a basket (8:06) for a 10-point advantage (56-46). Guard Kaitlin Schullstrom’s (fr. Colts Neck, NJ/Colts Neck) three-pointer (3:33) cut the deficit to four (56-52). Rutgers-Newark ended the game with six straight points for the victory. Howard scored four points and Marshall had two.
The Scarlet Raiders opened the game with a 7-0 run in 3:05. The Profs went ahead 9-7 after a layup and foul shot by Creel (14:55). The score was tied four times before Rutgers-Newark took the lead for good. The last one came at 10:14 (14-14) after Rowan center Kate Matthews (fr. Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) made a layup. Marshall followed with eight unanswered points for an eight-point lead (22-14) at 7:18. Farrell’s basket at 3:49 pulled the Profs within five (26-21). Johnson’s layup at the 41-second mark stretched the advantage to nine (32-23). Schullstrom hit a three-pointer with one second on the clock and Rowan trailed 34-28 at the intermission. Marshall collected 15 points in the first period.
Next, Rowan hosts Richard Stockton College on Wednesday, January 18 in a 6 p.m. conference game.
