Field Hockey Falls to Second Ranked Messiah, 4-2

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Messiah College field hockey team defeated host Rowan University, 4-2 on Saturday afternoon. The second ranked Falcons are undefeated with a 2-0 record while the Profs, ranked 15th, have a 2-2 mark.

Messiah was led by forward Juliana Hershey (jr. Smoketown, PA/Lancaster Mennonite) with two goals. Forwards Emily Hursh (jr. Lancaster, Pa/Lancaster Mennonite) and Celina Nissley (fr. Middletown, PA/Lancaster Mennonite) contributed with one goal apiece. Forwards Brooke Sands (so. Lancaster, PA/Schuylkill Valley) and Kilee Rosenberry (sr. Akron, PA/Ephrata) each added an assist. Back Erika Cann (jr. Lehighton, PA/Lehighton) registered two defender saves.

Forwards Julie Cairone (sr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) and Rachael Dix (sr. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) scored for Rowan. The Profs totaled 26 shots while the Falcons collected 14. Goalie Lisa Apt (sr. Mays Landing/Oakcrest) made three saves in 60:43 for the Profs while goalie Jen Goldberg (jr. Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) had one in the final 9:17. Messiah goalies Molly Gebrosky (so. Latrobe, PA/Milton Hershey) and Kayleigh Stewart (so. Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) recorded two and nine saves respectively, with each playing a half.

The score was tied at one after the first half. Nissley put the Falcons up 2-1 at 60:03. She knocked in a rebound after a shot by Sands. Hershey followed with an unassisted goal 40 seconds later. She tapped in a loose ball in front of the cage. Cairone’s goal hit the left side and pulled the Profs within one at 62:14. Hershey added an insurance goal at 63:48 with a cross from Rosenberry.

Hursh put Messiah on the scoreboard first at 6:35. The goal came on a penalty corner with an assist from Sands. Dix tied the score (9:36) with a shot to the left side of the cage from 10 yards.

Rowan starts its conference schedule at home on Tuesday, September 13 against Richard Stockton College at 7 p.m.
