RADNOR, PA – The Rowan University field hockey team opened the 2011 season with an 8-3 victory over Cabrini College on Thursday afternoon.
The Profs (1-0), ranked 15th in the Kookaburra/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III Preseason Poll, were led by forward/midfielder Rachael Dix (sr. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) with three goals and two assists. Midfielder Ashley Adams (sr. Erial, NJ/Timber Creek Reg.) scored twice. Forward Katie Griffis (jr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) added one goal and one assist. Forward/midfielder Marisa Schoepflin (jr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) and back Janice Camlin (sr. West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford) tallied one goal apiece, while forward Julie Cairone (sr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) picked up one assist.
For the Cavaliers (0-1), midfielder Maura Gordon (sr. Lititz, PA/Lancaster Catholic) registered two goals. Forward Karli Gruccio (fr. Landisville, NJ/Buena Reg.) posted one goal. Forwards Lauren Alessi (sr. Woolwich, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) and Stephanie Campanaro (sr. Philadelphia, PA/Northeast) both dished one assist.
Rowan took 36 shots and Cabrini had 12. Profs’ goalie Lisa Apt (sr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) made seven saves. Cavaliers’ goalie Vicky King (jr. Downingtown, PA/Downingtown W.) turned away 15 shots in 55:18. Goalie Genevieve Paulin (so. Hazlet, NJ/Raritan) had two saves in the final 14:42.
Adams’ unassisted goal at 2:27 in the first period gave Rowan a 1-0 advantage. At 7:46, Adams knocked in a pass from Dix. Just under three minutes later, Dix found Schoepflin for a goal to put the Profs up 3-0. Dix scored on a breakaway at 18:23. Gordon chipped in a feed from Campanaro at 22:32 to cut the deficit to three (4-1) at the intermission.
In the second half, Dix deflected a shot in front at 41:48 to increase the lead to four (5-1). Griffis’ goal came at 43:43. Dix scored her third goal on a long pass from Griffis at 48:12. Camlin’s goal on a penalty corner at 55:20 made the score, 8-1. Cairone recorded the assist. Gruccio put in a rebound at 57:29. With 7:04 remaining, Gordon converted a penalty corner on a pass from Alessi.
Rowan hosts Haverford College in its home opener on Saturday, September 3 at 1 p.m.
