Rowan Defeats Randolph-Macon, 8-5 in First Round of NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional

LAKEWOOD, NJ – Second seeded Rowan University had an 8-5 victory over the seventh seed Randolph-Macon College in the first round of the NCAA Division III Baseball Mid-Atlantic Regional on Thursday morning. The tournament is being held at FirstEnergy Park.

Rowan (31-11-1) will play the third seed Alvernia University (36-7) at 10 p.m. Thursday night. Prior, the top seed Kean University meets the fifth seed Messiah College at 12:30 p.m. Randolph-Macon (24-19) takes on the sixth seed Johns Hopkins University at 3:30 p.m. and the fourth seed Misericordia University faces the eighth seed Catholic University at 6:45 p.m.

In the first round games on Wednesday, May 18, Misericordia topped Messiah, 3-1, Catholic upset Kean, 3-2 and Alvernia had a 2-1 win over Johns Hopkins. The regional tournament is double elimination. The winner advances to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament on Friday-Tuesday, May 27-31 at Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton, WI.

Right-hander Ryan Peterson (jr. Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery) pitched four innings in relief for his first win of the season. Peterson (1-0) did not allow a hit and struck out four batters. Lefty Kyle Brown (so. Southampton, NJ/Seneca) was on the mound for the final 0.2 innings for the save. Right-hander Kyle Hicks (sr. Goochland, VA/Goochland) took the loss. He (4-2) surrendered seven runs, six earned on 10 hits in four innings.

Profs’ third baseman Brad Woodend (sr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) went four for five with two RBIs and one run scored. First baseman Matt Hill (jr. Hamilton Square, NJ/Robbinsville) posted two hits (three at bats), two RBIs and one run scored. Center fielder Matt Citro (sr. Bloomsbury, NJ/Phillipsburg) compiled two hits (four at bats), two runs scored and a triple. Right fielder Kevin O’Brien (sr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) produced two hits (three at bats), one RBI and one run scored.

Left fielder Scott Weaver (sr. Ledgewood, NJ/Roxbury) tallied two hits in three trips to the plate and one run scored. Catcher Nick Turano (jr. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) collected one hit (five at bats), one RBI and one run scored. Second baseman Brandon Winkler (jr. Glendora, NJ/Paul VI) added one hit (three at bats), one RBI and one run scored.

For the Yellow Jackets, shortstop Peter Culver (fr. Bumpass, VA/Louisa) was two for five with two runs scored and one RBI. Center fielder Jeb Weymouth (so. Rockville, VA/Hanover) contributed with two hits (five at bats), one RBI and one run scored.

Second baseman Greg Mitro (sr. Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) had one hit (four at bats) and two RBIs. Left fielder Brian Jordan (jr. Columbia, VA/Goochland) chipped in with one hit (four at bats) and one run scored. Right fielder Jake Fletcher (so. Deltaville, VA/Middlesex) crossed the plate once.

Randolph-Macon took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. With one out, Culver and Weymouth had back-to-back singles. They both advanced one base on a ground out. Mitro followed with a single up the middle knocking in Weymouth and Culver. Rowan tied the game (2-2) in the second. O’Brien had a leadoff bunt single. He went to second on a single to left field by Citro. Weaver moved the runners to second and third with a sacrifice bunt. Hill ripped a single up the middle that brought Citro and O’Brien home.

The Yellow Jackets recorded three runs in the top of the fourth. Fletcher reached base on a fielder’s choice and he went to second on Jordan’s walk. Culver’s base hit scored Fletcher from second. Weymouth singled to left field, scoring Jordan. First baseman Jordan Walton (jr. Mechanicsville, VA/Lee-Davis) hit into a fielder’s choice. Culver moved to third on the play and came home on a wild pitch.

In the bottom half, Weaver had an infield single and went to second on a fielding error. Hill followed with a single to left field. Winkler hit a single through the left side of the infield, plating Weaver. Woodend had a two run single to right field that scored Hill and Winkler. Turano’s single to left center field knocked in Woodend. On the play, Turano advanced to third base on two throwing errors. He crossed the plate on O’Brien’s single to left field, making the score, 7-5. The Profs added an insurance run in the seventh. With one out, Citro hit a triple off the right field fence. He scored on a wild pitch.
