Salisbury Defeats Rowan in the First Round of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament

SALISBURY, MD – The Salisbury University women’s lacrosse team had a 10-6 victory over Rowan University in the first round of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament on Wednesday afternoon.

On Saturday, May 14 at 11:30 a.m., the Sea Gulls (18-2) will play the winner of the first round game between Washington and Lee University and Christopher Newport University. The Profs finish the season with a 10-7 record. The quarterfinals are scheduled for Sunday, May 15. The national semifinals (Saturday, May 21) and championship game (Sunday, May 22) will be played at Adelphi University in Garden City, NY.

Salisbury was led by midfielder Alyssa Fowler (jr. Odenton, MD/Arundel) with three goals and one assist. Midfielders Allie Wheatley (jr. Cambridge, MD/Salisbury School) and Aileen McCausland (sr. Phoenix, MD/Hereford) both found the net twice. Attack Katie Bollhorst (so. Severna Park, MD/St. Mary’s) tallied one goal and two assists. Attack Logan Bilderback (sr. Arnold, MD/Broadneck) and midfielder Morgan Illian (sr. Salisbury, MD/Parkside) each scored once. Attack Trish DiGirolomo (sr. Davidsonville, MD/Archbishop Spalding) dished two assists, while midfielder Roxanne Raab (so. Fallston, MD/Fallston) and attack Meagan Osipowich (sr. Hauppauge, NY/Hauppauge) had one apiece.

For Rowan, midfielder Michelle Lubrano (jr. Delanco, NJ/Holy Cross) registered four goals. Attacks Alli Dickey (sr. Stevensville, MD/Kent Island) and Caitlin Ravel (so. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) each collected one goal. Attack Vicky Sucharski (fr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) compiled two assists.

Salisbury took 31 shots, while Rowan had 17. Goalie Julie Ann Caulfield (sr. Drexel Hill, PA/Upper Darby) made nine saves in the Sea Gulls’ net. Profs’ goalie Lindsay Barrie (fr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) stopped 14 shots.

The Sea Gulls jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first 8:25 of the first period. Bollhorst scored the first goal (3:56) with an assist from Osipowich. McCausland and Fowler followed with goals at 4:28 and 8:25. Ravel found the net on a feed from Sucharski at 12:04 to bring the Profs within two (3-1). Salisbury had two straight goals from McCausland (13:45) and Fowler (14:53) to extend the advantage to four (5-1).

Lubrano scored on a free position shot at 21:16, but Wheatley answered with a goal at 22:38. Rowan cut the deficit to three (6-3) at the intermission with a free position goal by Lubrano with nine seconds on the clock.

At 31:50 in the second period, Lubrano recorded an unassisted goal. Dickey scored on a pass from Sucharski at 37:11 and the Profs trailed by one (6-5). Wheatley (38:33) and Fowler (40:14) had back-to-back goals to make the score, 8-5. Lubrano’s fourth goal came at 42:56. The Sea Gulls ended the game with goals by Illian (57:23) and Bilderback (58:23).
