GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University baseball team had a 16-3 victory over 20th ranked The College of New Jersey in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Thursday afternoon.

The Profs improve to 14-6-1 overall and 2-1 in the conference. The Lions are 14-5 with a 1-2 NJAC mark. Right-hander Mike Swietanski (sr. Woodbury, NJ/West Deptford) pitched five innings for the win (3-1). He scattered seven hits and gave up one unearned run. Righty Pat O’Donnell (fr. Middletown, NJ/Middletown S.) was on the mound for the final three innings to earn his first career save. Right-hander Sean Stewart (sr. Howell, NJ/Freehold Twp.) took the loss (1-1). He surrendered nine earned runs in 2.1 innings.

The Rowan offense was led by right fielder Kevin O’Brien (sr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) with three hits (four at bats), four RBIs, two runs scored and a triple. Center fielder Matt Citro (sr. Bloomsbury, NJ/Phillipsburg) was three for four with two RBIs, two runs scored and a double. Catcher Nick Turano (jr. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) added two hits (five at bats), two RBIs, two runs scored and two doubles. Third baseman Brad Woodend (sr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) was two for four with three runs scored and two RBIs. Designated hitter C.J. Szymczak (so. Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) chipped in with three hits (four at bats), two RBIs and one run scored.

Left fielder Scott Weaver (sr. Ledgewood, NJ/Roxbury) produced two hits (four at bats), two runs scored and a double. Second baseman Brandon Winkler (jr. Glendora, NJ/Paul VI) went one for three with one RBI and one run scored. First baseman Matt Hill (jr. Hamilton Square, NJ/Robbinsville) registered one RBI and one run scored. Shortstop Marc Magliaro (jr. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) contributed with one hit (four at bats), one RBI and one run scored.

For the Lions, designated hitter Andrew Priece (so. Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) compiled two hits (three at bats) and one RBI. Right fielder Ed Zakrzewski (jr. Three Bridges, NJ/Hunterdon Central) recorded one hit (three at bats) and one RBI. Catcher Paul Searles (fr. Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel) had one RBI and one run scored. Center fielder Mike Murphy (so. Staten Island, NY/Staten Island Tech) and second baseman Scott Kelly (so. W. Windsor, NJ/W. Windsor-Plainsboro N.) both tallied one hit and one run scored.

Rowan scored four runs in the first inning. Turano doubled to right center field knocking in Weaver and Woodend. O’Brien followed with a RBI single that plated Turano. Winkler singled up the middle and O’Brien came home. The Profs tacked on seven runs in the third. O’Brien reached base with a triple to right center field. He scored on a single by Szymczak. Citro drove in two runs with a single down the left field line. Magliaro and Woodend both had RBI singles. O’Brien’s bases loaded walk brought home Magliaro. Woodend scored on a single by Szymczak.

TCNJ got on the scoreboard with one run in the top of the fourth inning. Priece’s single to left center field drove in Murphy. In the bottom half, Citro doubled and later scored on a single by Woodend. Rowan scored one run in the fifth. Turano doubled and came home on Hill’s sacrifice fly.

The Lions added one run in the top of the sixth. Searles had a leadoff walk and he later scored on a fielder’s choice. In the bottom of the inning, O’Brien ripped a two run single up the middle to increase the lead to 15-2. The Profs got one run in the seventh. Pinch hitter/second baseman Rob Wilgus (jr. Woolwich, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) reached base with a single and later crossed the plate on a wild pitch. In the top of the ninth, Kelly singled through the left side and came home on a double play.

The two teams meet again on Friday, April 8 in Ewing, NJ at 3:30 p.m.
