Catholic Wins In Overtime Against Rowan, 18-14

WASHINGTON, DC – The 10th ranked Catholic University women’s lacrosse team won in overtime, 18-14 against Rowan University on Wednesday evening. The game was delayed for two hours near the end of the first half because of lightning.

The Cardinals scored four goals in overtime for the victory. With 4:06 left in the second period, attack Ellen Brigham (so. Oakton, VA/Oakton) tied the score at 14 for Rowan. Midfielder Mary Swarthout (jr. Rockville, MD/Our Lady of Good Counsel) registered the first goal in overtime with 4:54 remaining. Attack Katie Buonpastore (sr. Lansdale, PA/Lansdale Catholic) recorded the second goal 27 seconds later followed by midfielder/attack Lindsay Davenport’s (sr. Delran, NJ/Delran) free position goal with 3:42 on the clock. Buonpastore scored the final goal at the 32 second mark.

Buonpastore finished the game with six goals and two assists. Midfielder Kate Robinson (sr. Emmitsburg, MD/Catoctin) contributed with four goals and one assist while Swarthout totaled four goals. Davenport added two goals and two assists. Midfielder/attack Kelly Ryan (sr. Levittown, NY/MacArthur) chipped in with one goal and one assist. Midfielder/attack Meghan Brady (jr. Huntington Bay, NY/St. Anthony’s) scored one goal while attack Chelsea Gleason (fr. Bethesda, MD/The Bullis School) had one assist.

The Profs were led by midfielder Michelle Lubrano (jr. Delanco, NJ/Holy Cross) with six goals and two assists. Attack Vicky Sucharski (fr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) had two goals and three assists. Attack Leah Hershey (sr. Glen Rock, PA/Suquehannock) tallied two goals and one assist. Midfielder Alli Dickey (sr. Stevensville, MD/Kent Island) and Brigham each scored twice.

Catholic has an 11-3 record and Rowan is 9-6 on the season. The Cardinals compiled 44 total shots while the Profs took 24. Goalie Lindsay Barrie (fr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) made 13 saves in the Rowan net. Catholic goalie Gabby Sena (jr. Farmingdale, NJ/St. John Vianney) stopped two shots in 48:05. Goalie Yasmeen Aidari (fr. Bethesda, MD/Walter Johnson) played 17:55.

Catholic opened the second half with five unanswered goals to take the lead, 12-9. Robinson scored the first two (30:28, 31:04) followed by Buonpastore within two (32:05, 32:25) and Swarthout (32:38) had one. Rowan pulled with one (12-11) after Lubrano had a free position goal (36:10) and Hershey scored unassisted (36:41). Brigham tied the score at 12 (41:48) and Brady made the score 13-12 (42:11). Lubrano’s goal at 48:05 evened the score at 13. Buonpastore put the Cardinals ahead at 48:46 and Brigham scored the goal (55:54) for overtime.

The Cardinals started the game with three straight goals, one each by Ryan, Swarthout and Robinson, in a span of 2:55. Dickey put the Profs on the scoreboard at 3:45 with a free position goal. Lubrano cut the deficit to one (3-2) with a goal at 5:39 on a pass from Sucharski. Swarthout gave Catholic a two goal advantage (4-2) at 9:28. Rowan responded with five straight goals to go ahead, 7-4 with 10:37 remaining. Lubrano started (10:44) and ended (19:23) the run with free position goals. Dickey, Sucharski and Hershey all contributed with one goal in between. Catholic pulled within one (7-6) after goals by Robinson (20:28) and Davenport (22:28). Sucharski hit the net on a free position shot (27:39) and Lubrano had an unassisted goal (29:22) for a 9-6 advantage. Buonpastore scored with 22 seconds left and Catholic trailed, 9-7 at the intermission.

Next week, Rowan plays its last regular season game at Montclair State University on Thursday, May 5 at 7 p.m.
