GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University women’s lacrosse team defeated Kean University, 20-9 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Saturday afternoon.
Rowan is 9-5 overall and 3-1 in the conference. Kean has an 8-8 record and a 1-4 NJAC mark. The Profs were led by midfielder Michelle Lubrano (jr. Delanco, NJ/Holy Cross) with six goals and three assists. Attack Leah Hershey (sr. Glen Rock, PA/Susquehannock) totaled five goals and two assists. Attack Trish Harrington (sr. Mahwah, NJ/Suffern (NY)) scored four times. Defender Shannon O’Brien (so. Kendall Park, NJ/South Brunswick) registered two goals and one assist.
Attack Alli Dickey (sr. Stevensville, MD/Kent Island) contributed with one goal and one assist, while attack Vicky Sucharski (fr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) posted one goal and two assists. Attack Ellen Brigham (so. Oakton, VA/Oakton) found the net one time. Defender Tara Dinn (sr. Tabernacle, NJ/Seneca) dished two assists and defender Nicole Valianti (sr. Oaklyn, NJ/Collingswood) had one.
For the Cougars, attack Lyndsey Cannon (so. Delran, NJ/Delran) compiled six goals. Attack Julie Knodt (fr. Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) tallied one goal and two assists. Midfielder Ciara Mastrodomenico (fr. Blairstown, NJ/North Warren) and attack Amanda South (sr. Fairless Hills, PA/Conwell-Egan Catholic) both scored once.
Rowan took 40 shots and Kean had 17. Profs’ goalie Lindsay Barrie (fr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) made three saves in 41:56. Goalie Kerry Pehnke (jr. West Windsor, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro N.) stopped two shots in 18:04. Goalie Ashlie Berghold (sr. Boyertown, PA/Boyertown Area Senior) started in the Cougars’ net and turned away five shots in 27:37. Goalie Jules Keeley (so. Ocean Twp., NJ/Ocean Twp.) made six stops in 32:23.
The Profs scored three goals in the first 2:28 of the first period. O’Brien (:32), Harrington (:58) and Lubrano (2:28) all had an unassisted goal. Cannon put the Cougars on the scoreboard with an unassisted goal at 2:52. Rowan tallied five straight goals to lead, 8-1 at 11:54. Lubrano scored twice, while Sucharski, Harrington and Hershey each had one goal.
Cannon recorded back-to-back goals at 14:48 and 16:53 to cut the deficit to five (8-3). Lubrano added an unassisted goal at 20:19 and Cannon’s goal at 21:34 made the score, 9-4. Lubrano (23:14) and Dickey (27:37) both found the net to give the Profs an 11-4 halftime advantage.
In the second period, Hershey (30:31) and O’Brien (35:42) had one goal apiece to put Rowan ahead, 13-4. Knodt (37:42) and South (38:51) both scored a goal and the Cougars trailed by seven (13-6). Dinn assisted on consecutive goals by Hershey (39:04) and Harrington (39:27). Cannon scored on a feed from Knodt at 40:47 to make the score, 15-7.
Harrington registered a goal at 44:15 and Hershey got the assist. Mastrodomenico’s goal came at 44:48. Cannon converted a free position shot at 48:04 and Kean was down by seven (16-9). Lubrano assisted on Hershey’s goal at 53:03. Brigham and Hershey added goals at 55:16 and 55:38 respectively. Lubrano’s final goal came with 2:23 remaining.
Rowan travels to Catholic University for a nonconference game on Wednesday, April 27 at 6 p.m.
