UNION, NJ – The Kean University baseball team defeated Rowan University, 3-0 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Friday afternoon.
The Cougars improve to 27-5 overall and 10-2 in the conference. The Profs have a 21-8-1 record with a 9-3 NJAC mark. In this week’s American Baseball Coaches Association/Collegiate Baseball Division III Poll, Kean was ranked third and Rowan was 23rd.
Right-hander Mike Russo (jr. Hamilton, NJ/Hun School of Princeton) pitched a complete game for the win (7-0). He held the Profs to one hit, which came in the eighth inning. Lefty Curtis Arsi (jr. Washington Twp., NJ/Westwood Reg.) took the loss (5-3). He tossed seven innings, allowing three earned runs on seven hits.
Designated hitter Kyle Walker (sr. Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) was two for four with one run scored. Right fielder Nick Nolan (sr. Linden, NJ/Roselle Catholic) registered one hit (four at bats) and one run scored. Third baseman Nick Ramagli (so. Emerson, NJ/Emerson) went one for one with one RBI and one run scored. Catcher Eddie Jennings (jr. Jackson, NJ/Jackson Mem.) tallied one hit (two at bats) and one RBI. Shortstop Tyler Smarslok (fr. Jackson, NJ/Jackson Liberty) drove in one run. For Rowan, shortstop Marc Magliaro (sr. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) collected one hit in three trips to the plate.
Kean went ahead, 1-0 in the third inning. Ramagli led off with a walk and stole second and third. He came home on a suicide squeeze by Smarslok. In the bottom of the seventh, Walker singled and moved to second on Nolan’s bunt single. Ramagli followed with a single up the middle and Walker scored. Jennings singled and Nolan crossed the plate.
Rowan hosts a NJAC doubleheader against New Jersey City University on Saturday, April 23 at 11:30 a.m.
