GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University baseball team had a 6-4 victory over Kean University in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Thursday afternoon.

The Profs are 22-7-1 overall, while the Cougars have a 26-5 record. Both teams are 9-2 in the conference. In this week’s American Baseball Coaches Association/Collegiate Baseball Division III Poll, Kean was ranked third and Rowan was 23rd.

Right-hander Mike Swietanski (sr. Woodbury, NJ/West Deptford) earned the win (5-1). He went 7.2 innings, allowing one unearned run on four hits. Swietanski totaled a season-high 10 strikeouts. Right-hander John O’Hara (sr. Clayton, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) picked up the save. Righty Joe Bartlinski (sr. South Amboy, NJ/South Amboy) took the loss (3-2). He surrendered seven hits and five earned runs in three innings.

Catcher Nick Turano (jr. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) led the Profs’ offense with four hits (four at bats), two RBIs, two runs scored and a double. Right fielder Kevin O’Brien (sr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) was three for five with three RBIs and a double. Shortstop Marc Magliaro (sr. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) produced two hits (four at bats) and one run scored. Left fielder Scott Weaver (sr. Ledgewood, NJ/Roxbury) added one hit (four at bats) and two runs scored. First baseman Matt Hill (jr. Hamilton Square, NJ/Robbinsville) contributed with one hit (three at bats) and one RBI, while third baseman Brad Woodend (sr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) scored once.

For the Cougars, pinch hitter/center fielder Vinny Galya (jr. Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge) went one for two with two RBIs and a double. Right fielder Nick Nolan (sr. Linden, NJ/Roselle Catholic) tallied three hits (four at bats) and one run scored. Pinch hitter/third baseman Nick Ramagli (so. Emerson, NJ/Emerson) and shortstop Tyler Smarslok (fr. Jackson, NJ/Jackson Liberty) both had one hit and one run scored. First baseman Lee Cavico (jr. North Brunswick, NJ/Bishop Ahr) drove in one run and designated hitter Dylan Laguna (jr. Edison, NJ/Edison) scored once.

Rowan scored three runs in the first inning. Magliaro had a leadoff single and stole second. He went to third on a groundout and came home on Turano’s single up the middle. O’Brien doubled down the right field line, plating Turano and Weaver. In the top of the third, Smarslok singled and went to second on an error. He moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a ground out by Cavico. The Profs added one run in the bottom to go up, 4-1. Hill ripped a RBI single through the left side that knocked in Turano, who reached base on a double.

With two outs in the fourth, Woodend crossed the plate on a base hit by Turano. Rowan extended the lead to 6-1 with one run in the sixth. Weaver singled and went to third on Turano’s single to center field. He scored on an infield single by O’Brien. Kean rallied for three runs in the top of the ninth but fell short. Laguna got on base following an error. Nolan and Ramagli had back-to-back singles to load the bases. Laguna came home on a passed ball. Galya followed with a double to right center that drove in Ramagli and Nolan.

The two teams meet again on Friday, April 22 in Union, NJ at 3:30 p.m.
