GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University baseball team defeated Alvernia University, 9-2 in a nonconference game on Wednesday afternoon.
The Profs improve to 21-7-1, while the Crusaders have a 25-4 record. In this week’s American Baseball Coaches Association/Collegiate Baseball Division III Poll, Alvernia and Rowan were 11th and 23rd respectively.
Rowan right-hander Kyle Norman (sr. Oakhurst, NJ/Ocean Twp.) earned the win (2-1) in relief. He tossed 4.2 scoreless innings, scattering four hits. Righty Andrew Kirk (jr. Media, PA/Penncrest) took the loss (6-1). He surrendered four earned runs on eight hits in 5.1 innings.
Left fielder Scott Weaver (sr. Ledgewood, NJ/Roxbury) led the Profs with two hits (four at bats), three RBIs, two runs scored and a double. Right fielder Kevin O’Brien (sr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) went two for three with two RBIs. Center fielder Matt Citro (sr. Bloomsbury, NJ/Phillipsburg) compiled two hits (four at bats) and three runs scored.
First baseman Matt Hill (jr. Hamilton Square, NJ/Robbinsville) posted two hits (three at bats) and two runs scored. Shortstop Marc Magliaro (sr. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) added one hit (three at bats), two RBIs and one run scored. Pinch hitter/second baseman Brandon Winkler (jr. Glendora, NJ/Paul VI) was one for one with two RBIs and one run scored.
For the Crusaders, third baseman Chris Ray (so. Exton, PA/Henderson) tallied three hits (five at bats), one RBI and one run scored. Center fielder Leon Stimpson (so. Philadelphia, PA/Malvern Prep) totaled one hit (five at bats) and one run scored. Right fielder Brian Witkowski (so. Ewing, NJ/Notre Dame) collected two hits in three trips to the plate.
Rowan scored one run in the first and second innings. With two outs in the first, Weaver walked. He advanced to third on designated hitter Nick Turano’s (jr. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) single to left center field. O’Brien followed with a single to right field and Weaver came home. In the second, Hill had an infield single. He moved to third on a single through the left side by Citro. Magliaro’s sacrifice fly to right field drove in Hill.
Alvernia got one run in the third to trail by one (2-1). Stimpson reached on an error and went to second on a wild pitch. He advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a single to center field by Ray. The Profs added one run in the fourth. Magliaro ripped a single up the middle, plating Citro. The Crusaders’ final run came in the top of the fifth. Ray led off with a single through the right side. On an attempted pick off, Hill tossed the ball over the shortstop’s head allowing Ray to go to third. On the same play, Ray scored on an errant throw by Weaver.
In the sixth, Rowan scored four runs. Winkler hit a two run single to right field. Weaver followed with a RBI double to left center and he crossed the plate on O’Brien’s single to right field. The Profs tacked on two runs in the seventh. Magliaro and Citro came home on a single up the middle by Weaver.
Rowan hosts third ranked Kean University in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game on Thursday, April 21 at 3:30 p.m.
