Rowan Splits Doubleheader At William Paterson

WAYNE, NJ – The Rowan University and William Paterson University baseball teams split a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers won the first game, 14-4 and the Profs took the second, 2-0.

Rowan is 12-6-1 overall and 1-1 in the NJAC. William Paterson has an 11-7-1 record and a 1-1 conference mark. In the first game, left-hander Josh Jensen (fr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) was the winning pitcher (3-1). He went five innings allowing three runs on seven hits. Righty Steve Coral (jr. Totowa, NJ/Passaic Valley Reg.) threw the final four innings for his third save of the season. Right-hander Jeff White (sr. Stratford, NJ/Sterling) took the loss (1-2). He surrendered five earned runs in 0.2 innings.

The Pioneers were led by center fielder Jack Montanile (jr. Weekhawken, NJ/Hudson Catholic) with three hits (four at bats), three RBIs, two runs scored and a double. Right fielder Rob Somers (jr. West Long Branch, NJ/Shore Reg.) was three for three with three runs scored and two RBIs. Third baseman A.J. Flores (fr. West Orange, NJ/West Orange) compiled three hits (five at bats), two RBIs, two runs scored and a triple. Left fielder Mike Moran (sr. Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock Twp.) added three hits (four at bats), three RBIs, one run scored and a double.

First baseman Adam Derner (jr. River Edge, NJ/River Dell Reg.) posted two hits (five at bats), two runs scored, one RBI and a double. Designated hitter Scott Hansen (so. Saddle Brook, NJ/Don Bosco Prep) went one for three with two runs scored. Catcher Ken O’Donnell (fr. Teaneck, NJ/Don Bosco Prep) chipped in with one hit (four at bats), one RBI and one run scored. Shortstop Anthony Dorio (jr. Lyndhurst, NJ/Lyndhurst) recorded one RBI and one run scored, while pinch hitter Mike Arecchi (fr. Hazlet, NJ/St. John Vianney) drove in one run.

For Rowan, left fielder Scott Weaver (sr. Ledgewood, NJ/Roxbury) produced two hits (five at bats), one RBI and one run scored. Shortstop Marc Magliaro (jr. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) was two for five with one run scored, while catcher Nick Turano (jr. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) had two hits (five at bats) and one RBI. Second baseman Brandon Winkler (jr. Glendora, NJ/Paul VI) and right fielder Kevin O’Brien (sr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) contributed with one hit (four at bats) and one RBI apiece. Third baseman Brad Woodend (sr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) was one for three with one run scored. Designated hitter Bobby Gorski (sr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) scored once.

William Paterson went ahead, 7-0 after scoring five runs in the first inning and two in the second. Somers walked with the bases loaded in the first inning and Dorio came home. O’Donnell hit a single to third base and Derner crossed the plate. Montanile’s sacrifice bunt scored Hansen and Moran ripped a two run single to center field. In the second, Flores led off with a single and later scored on a double by Derner. Somers’ single to right field knocked in Derner.

Rowan cut the deficit to four (7-3) with three runs in the top of the third. With the bases loaded, Winkler hit a sacrifice fly to right field that brought Gorski home. Weaver followed with a single through the left side that plated Woodend. O’Brien’s single up the middle allowed Magliaro to score from third. In the bottom half, Flores recorded a two run triple to right center field. He came home on a sacrifice fly by Dorio.

The Pioneers tacked on one run in the fourth to go up, 11-3. Montanile doubled in Somers, who was hit by a pitch. In the bottom of the eighth, Hansen walked and later scored on a ground out by Arecchi. Montanile ripped a single through the right side that drove in Somers and Moran’s double to center field allowed Montanile to come home. Rowan scored one run in the top of the ninth on a RBI single by Turano.

In the nightcap, left-hander Curtis Arsi (jr. Washington Twp., NJ/Westwood Reg.) threw seven innings for the win (4-1). He scattered six hits and struck out eight hitters. Righty John O’Hara (sr. Clayton, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) pitched the ninth for his second save of the year. Right-hander J.J. Moran (so. River Vale, NJ/Pascack Valley) suffered the loss (1-2). He went 7.1 innings, allowing two earned runs on seven hits.

Profs’ catcher C.J. Szymczak (so. Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) went two for four with one RBI and one run scored. Winkler added one hit (three at bats), one RBI and a double. Weaver chipped in with one hit (three at bats) and one run scored. Turano registered two hits in four trips to the plate.

For William Paterson, Dorio and Derner each posted two hits in four at bats. Montanile and O’Donnell were both one for four. Designated hitter Rob Doughty (jr. Jersey City, NJ/Hudson Catholic) and second baseman Scott Ptaszynski (fr. Warton, NJ/Morris Hills) contributed with one hit apiece.

Rowan scored both its runs in the top of the fourth inning. Weaver hit a lead off single up the middle. He moved to second on a ground out. Szymczak hit a single to left field and Weaver came home. After first baseman Matt Hill (jr. Hamilton Square, NJ/Robbinsville) was hit by a pitch, Winkler doubled to left center field, scoring Szymczak.

Rowan travels to Neumann University for a nonconference game on Tuesday, April 5 at 4 p.m.
