MONTCLAIR, NJ – The Rowan University baseball team split a doubleheader at New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) opponent Montclair State University on Sunday. The Red Hawks won the first game, 4-3 and the Profs took the second, 3-2.
Rowan is 20-7-1 overall and 8-2 in the conference. Montclair State has a 13-10 record with a 5-5 NJAC mark. In the first game, right-hander Zach Brown (so. New Vernon, NJ/Morristown) earned the win (4-1). He pitched 8.2 innings, allowing three earned runs on eight hits. Lefty John Silvestri (fr. Livingston, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) closed out the game for his first save of the season. Left-hander Curtis Arsi (jr. Washington Twp., NJ/Westwood Reg.) took the loss (5-2). He gave up four earned runs on 10 hits in eight innings. Arsi struck out seven batters.
Red Hawks’ left fielder Mickey McGraw (jr. Morristown, NJ/Morristown) went two for four with two RBIs and one run scored. Shortstop Jay Bionde sr. Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock) added two hits (four at bats) and one RBI. Catcher Kevin Bond (jr. Cedar Grove, NJ/Cedar Grove) produced two hits (four at bats), one run scored and a triple. First baseman Jason Chesterman (so. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) compiled one hit (four at bats), one RBI and a double. Third baseman Cody Pace (fr. Milltown, NJ/Spotswood) and right fielder Anthony Bowens (fr. Nutley, NJ/Nutley) both had one hit in four trips to the plate and one run scored.
For the Profs, catcher Nick Turano (jr. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) was two for four with one RBI and a double. Left fielder Scott Weaver (sr. Ledgewood, NJ/Roxbury) posted two hits (four at bats) and one run scored. Center fielder Matt Citro (sr. Bloomsbury, NJ/Phillipsburg) contributed with two hits (three at bats) and two runs scored. Third baseman Brad Woodend (sr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) tallied one hit (three at bats) and one RBI.
Rowan went ahead 1-0 in the top of the third inning. With one out, Citro walked. He stole second and went to third on a wild pitch. Citro crossed the plate on a wild pitch with Woodend at bat. In the top of the fifth, Woodend singled to left center field and Citro came home. Montclair State took a 3-2 lead with three runs in the bottom half. Pace had a leadoff single and he moved to second on Bowens’ single. The runners both advanced on a sacrifice bunt. McGraw ripped a single through the right side, scoring Bowens and Pace. McGraw stole second and Bionde drove him in with a single to right field.
The Profs tied the game (3-3) with one run in the top of the eighth. Weaver singled through the left side and stole second. He came home on a single to right center field by Turano. In the bottom of the inning, Bond tripled to center field and later scored on Chesterman’s double to right center.
In the nightcap, right-hander Steven Melchiorre (so. Atco, NJ/Hammonton) threw 7.1 innings for the win (4-0). He allowed two earned runs on seven hits. Melchiorre struck out seven batters. Righty John O’Hara (sr. Clayton, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) was on the mound for the ninth inning to pick up his fifth save of the year. Left-hander Dylan Papa (fr. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) was the losing pitcher (0-2). He gave up three earned runs on seven hits in eight innings.
Profs’ shortstop Marc Magliaro (sr. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) collected two hits (four at bats), one RBI and one run scored. Turano was two for three with one RBI and a double. Citro totaled two hits (two at bats) and two runs scored. Second baseman Brandon Winkler (jr. Glendora, NJ/Paul VI) drove in one run.
For the Red Hawks, Pace registered two hits (three at bats) and one run scored. Bond had two hits (four at bats) and a double. Center fielder Michael Boggi (sr. Towaco, NJ/Montville) went one for four with one RBI. Second baseman Andrew Himmelfarb (sr. Upper Nyack, NY/Nyack) posted one hit (three at bats) and one RBI. Chesterman crossed the plate once.
Rowan scored one run in the first. Magliaro singled up the middle and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. He went to third on a ground out and scored on Turano’s double to left field. Montclair State went up 2-1 with two runs in the second. Pace singled and Chesterman followed with a walk. Boggi had a base hit through the left side, plating Pace. With two outs, Himmelfarb singled and Chesterman came home.
In the top of the sixth, Citro had a hit up the middle and stole second. He went to third on a ground out and scored on a Winkler’s sacrifice fly to center field, tying the game (2-2). Rowan had one run in the top of the eighth for a 3-2 advantage. Citro recorded a two out walk and stole second base. Magliaro followed with a single through the right side and Citro crossed the plate.
Rowan travels to Elizabethtown College for a nonconference game on Tuesday, April 18 at 4 p.m.
