GLASSBORO, NJ – Center fielder Matt Citro hit a RBI double in the bottom of the 10th inning to give Rowan University at 4-3 win over Richard Stockton College in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Friday afternoon.
The game was tied (3-3) after nine innings. The Ospreys were retired in order in the top of the 10th. In the bottom half, first baseman Eric Newell (sr. Haddon Heights, NJ/Haddon Heights) hit a single through the left side and stole second. With two outs, Citro (sr. Bloomsbury, NJ/Phillipsburg) ripped a double off the right center field wall, scoring Newell.
Rowan is 19-6-1 overall and 7-1 in the conference. Richard Stockton has a 16-10 record with a 2-6 NJAC mark. Right-hander John O’Hara (sr. Clayton, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) pitched 1.2 innings in relief for the win (2-0). He did not allow a hit and struck out two hitters. Left-hander Mark Porter (sr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Lower Merion (PA)) started the game and went 5.1 innings. He surrendered one earned run on six hits. Righty John Lightbody (sr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River E.) took the loss (0-2). He was on the mound for the final 1.2 innings and gave up one earned run on two hits.
Newell finished the game with three hits (four at bats), two RBIs, one run scored and a double. Shortstop Marc Magliaro (jr. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) was two for four with one run scored. Designated hitter Nick Turano (jr. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) produced one hit (five at bats) and one RBI. Right fielder Kevin O’Brien (sr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) compiled one hit (two at bats) and two runs scored.
For the Ospreys, shortstop Shawn Kessler (so. Bayville, NJ/Central Reg.) posted two hits (four at bats), one RBI and one run scored. Designated hitter Chris Wedding (jr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River E.) had two hits (four at bats) and one RBI. First baseman Mike Wasco (jr. Riverside, NJ/Riverside) tallied two hits (four at bats) and one run scored. Center fielder Mike Bush (fr. Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Reg.) drove in one run, while left fielder Barry Larro (so. Cedarville, NJ/Cumberland Reg.) scored once.
Rowan went ahead, 1-0 in the fourth inning. O’Brien walked and went to second on a fly out. He advanced to third on a ground out and came home on a single off the pitcher by Newell. In the top of the sixth, Richard Stockton registered three runs to take a 3-1 lead. Wasco hit a one out single down the left field line. He went to second when Larro reached on an error. Kessler’s single through the right side plated Wasco. Bush’s suicide squeeze with the bases loaded allowed Larro to score. Wedding hit a RBI single that knocked in Kessler.
With two outs in the bottom half, Newell hit a RBI double down the right field line and O’Brien came home. Rowan added one run in the seventh to tie the game at three. Magliaro led off with a single to center field. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Turano followed with a single to center field and Magliaro scored.
Rowan travels to Montclair State University for a NJAC doubleheader on Sunday, April 17 at 2 p.m.
