EWING, NJ – The Rowan University baseball team defeated 20th ranked The College of New Jersey, 7-4 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Sunday afternoon.

The Profs improve 17-6-1 overall and 5-1 in the conference. Rowan has won six straight games. The Lions have a 14-8 record with a 1-5 NJAC mark. Left-hander Mark Porter (sr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Lower Merion (PA)) was the winning pitcher (2-0). He went six innings, allowing one earned run on three hits. Righty John O’Hara (sr. Clayton, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his fourth save. Right-hander Robert Graber (so. Franklin Lakes, NJ/Ramapo) took the loss (2-1). He surrendered three earned runs on five hits in six innings.

Rowan shortstop Marc Magliaro (jr. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) went two for five with three RBIs and one run scored. Left fielder Scott Weaver (sr. Ledgewood, NJ/Roxbury) contributed with two hits (four at bats), one RBI and one run scored. Third baseman Brad Woodend (sr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) was one for five with one RBI, one run scored and a double. First baseman Eric Newell (sr. Haddon Heights, NJ/Haddon Heights) produced one hit (one at bats) and two RBIs.

Right fielder Kevin O’Brien (sr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.), center fielder Matt Citro (sr. Bloomsbury, NJ/Phillipsburg) and pinch hitter Rob Wilgus (jr. Woolwich, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) all chipped in with one hit and one run scored. Second baseman Brandon Winkler (jr. Glendora, NJ/Paul VI) crossed the plate once.

For the Lions, second baseman Scott Kelly (so. W. Windsor, NJ/W. Windsor-Plainsboro N.) totaled three hits (five at bats), one RBI and one run scored. Right fielder Andrew Priece (so. Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) went two for two with one RBI and one run scored. Left fielder Mike Murphy (so. Staten Island, NY/Staten Island Tech) collected one hit (three at bats) and one run scored. First baseman Jimmy Ruzich (jr. Verona, NJ/Montclair Kimberly Academy) posted one RBI, while pinch runner/designated hitter Anthony Palmiotto (sr. Manchester, NJ/Manchester Twp.) scored once.

TCNJ went up 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning. Kelly led off with a single up the middle and stole second. He advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on Ruzich’s sacrifice fly to left field. Rowan got three runs in the sixth inning to take a 3-1 lead. With two outs, Citro singled to left center field. He stole second base and went to third on an error. Magliaro’s single to left field plated Citro and he came home on a double by Woodend. Weaver’s single up the middle knocked in Woodend.

The Profs added two runs in the top of the seventh for a 5-1 advantage. Wilgus singled and Winkler and Citro had back-to-back walks to load the bases. Magliaro ripped a two run single to right center field that drove in Winkler and Wilgus. In the bottom half, the Lions collected three runs to trail by one (5-4). Murphy got on with a single and stole second. He scored on a Priece’s single to right center. Kelly had an infield single and Priece came home. Palmiotto crossed the plate on an error.

In the eighth, Weaver hit an infield single and he moved to second on O’Brien’s bunt single. Catcher C.J. Szymczak (so. Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) singled to right field to load the bases. Newell followed with a single to left field that allowed O’Brien and Weaver to score.

Rowan hosts Widener University in a nonconference game on Tuesday, April 12 at 3:30 p.m.
