GLASSBORO, NJ – The College at Brockport baseball team defeated Rowan University, 11-1 in a nonconference game on Saturday.
The Golden Eagles improve to 1-1, while the Profs have a 3-2 record. Right-hander Kyle Smith (sr. Sanborn, NY/Niagara Wheatfield) threw six innings for the win (1-0). He gave up five hits and one unearned run. Smith registered eight strikeouts. Righty Mike Swietanski (sr. Woodbury, NJ/West Deptford) took the loss (0-1). He surrendered three earned runs in three innings.
The Brockport offense was led by designated hitter Anthony Siracusa (jr. Auburn, NY/Auburn) with three hits (five at bats), three runs scored, two RBIs and two doubles. Shortstop Tom McCormick (sr. Utica, NY/Utica Notre Dame) was one for three with two RBIs. First baseman Max Zimmerman (sr. E. Amherst, NY/Williamsville N.) added one hit (three at bats) and two runs scored. Third baseman Mike Weakley (so. Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) contributed with two hits (six at bats), one run scored and a double.
For Rowan, second baseman Brandon Winkler (jr. Glendora, NJ/Paul VI) went two for four with one run scored and a double. Left fielder Scott Weaver (sr. Ledgewood, NJ/Roxbury) drove in one run. Pinch hitter C.J. Szymczak (so. Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) and third baseman Matt Hill (jr. Hamilton Square, NJ/Robbinsville) both hit a double.
Brockport took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Center fielder Max Keado (sr. Troy, NY/Catholic Central) led off with a single and stole second. Zimmerman followed with single through the left side that moved Keado to third. Siracusa’s double down the left field line plated Keado and advanced Zimmerman to third. Left fielder Zach Prentice (sr. Auburn, NY/Auburn) walked to load the bases. McCormick was hit by a pitch, scoring Zimmerman. Siracusa came home on an error with second baseman Jake Coleman (so. Hilton, NY/Hilton) at bat.
In the bottom half, Winkler doubled down the left field line. Weaver’s fly ball to right field was dropped and Winkler scored. The Golden Eagles tacked on two runs in the third. Siracusa hit a double to left field. He came home when Prentice reached base on an error. Catcher Casey Job (sr. Troy, NY/Troy) ripped a single up the middle, plating Prentice.
With two outs in the top of the fifth, Job and Coleman had back-to-back walks. Right fielder Mike DeGregory (jr. Saratoga Springs, NY/Schuylerville) knocked in Job with a single up the middle. Coleman also scored on the play after a throwing error. Brockport added four runs in the top of the eighth. Weakley reached first on an error and Zimmerman was hit by a pitch. Siracusa’s single through the left side brought Weakley home.
Pinch hitter Brandon Wroblewski (sr. Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) drove in Zimmerman with a single to right field. Pinch runner Kyle Tracy (fr. Plainview, NY/Bethpage) replaced Wroblewski. McCormick followed with a single to right field, scoring Siracusa. After a fly out, Coleman hit a single to left field that plated Tracy.
Rowan travels to North Carolina Wesleyan College for a doubleheader on Saturday, March 12 at 11 a.m.
