Rowan Ties Gwynedd-Mercy, 3-3 After 10 Innings

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA – Rowan University and Gwynedd-Mercy played to a 3-3 tie after 10 innings on Wednesday evening. The game was called due to darkness.

Rowan has an 11-5-1 record, while Gwynedd-Mercy is 5-7-1. The Profs used five pitchers, while the Griffins had two.

Left fielder Scott Weaver (sr. Ledgewood, NJ/Roxbury) went two for five for Rowan. Shortstop Marc Magliaro (jr. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) and catcher C.J. Szymczak (so. Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) both registered one hit (five at bats) and one RBI. Designated hitter Nick Turano (jr. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) and third baseman Brad Woodend (sr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) contributed with one hit (four at bats) and one run scored apiece. Magliaro’s hit was a triple, while Turano had a double.

For Gwynedd-Mercy, designated hitter Jay Sechowicz (sr. Churchville, PA/Council Rock S.) was two for four with one RBI and a double. Right fielder Austin Ley (sr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill E.) added one hit (four at bats) and one RBI. Third baseman Greg Brooks (fr. Voorhees, NJ/St. Joseph’s Prep (PA)) posted one run scored and one RBI. Center fielder Kevin Smeraglio (jr. Newtown, PA/Holy Ghost) and left fielder Colin Tosti (sr. Langhorne, PA/Neshaminy) each scored once.

Rowan took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Turano doubled and later scored on Szymczak’s single. Gwynedd-Mercy tied the game in the bottom of the fifth. First baseman Dante Cassano (fr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill E.) singled and Smeraglio pinch ran for him. After two straight fielder’s choice plays, Brooks’ sacrifice fly to left field plated Smeraglio.

The Griffins went ahead, 2-1 in the eighth. Brooks walked and went to second on a ground out. He came home on a double by Sechowicz. The Profs answered with one run in the top of the ninth. Woodend singled and Magliaro drove him in with a triple.

In the 10th, Turano had a two out walk. He was replaced by pinch runner Nate Floyd (so. Erial, NJ/Timber Creek Reg.) who advanced to second a wild pitch. First baseman Matt Hill (jr. Hamilton Square, NJ/Robbinsville) reached base on an error and Floyd scored. In the bottom half, Tosti walked and moved to second when Brooks was hit by a pitch. The runners went to second and third on a ground out. Ley followed with a single that brought Tosti home. The game was called at the conclusion of the 10th inning.

Rowan hosts Alvernia University on Thursday, March 31 at 3:30 p.m.
