GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University baseball team defeated visiting Arcadia University, 1-0 in a nonconference game on Tuesday afternoon.
Rowan has an 11-5 record, while Arcadia is 1-15. Right-hander Steven Melchiorre (so. Atco, NJ/Hammonton) pitched 7.2 scoreless innings for the win (2-0). He only allowed two hits and struck out six batters. Melchiorre had a no-hitter through six innings. Righty John O’Hara (sr. Clayton, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) was on the mound for the ninth inning to pick up his first save of the year. Right-hander Adam Planamento (jr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill E.) took the loss (0-5) in the relief.
Left fielder Scott Weaver (sr. Ledgewood, NJ/Roxbury) went one for four with one run scored. First baseman Matt Hill (jr. Hamilton Square, NJ/Robbinsville) collected one RBI. Shortstop Marc Magliaro (jr. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.), right fielder Kevin O’Brien (sr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.), designated hitter Rob Wilgus (jr. Woolwich, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) and third baseman Brad Woodend (sr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) all had one hit.
For the Lions, catcher Jerry Smith (so. Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) was one for four. Right fielder Patrick Kwiatkowski (fr. Bensalem, PA/Archbishop Ryan) added one hit in three trips to the plate.
Rowan’s run came in the bottom of the fourth inning. Weaver led off with a bunt single and advanced to second on a balk. O’Brien had a bunt single down the third base line that moved Weaver to third. Hill reached on a fielder’s choice and Weaver came home.
Rowan travels to Gwynedd-Mercy College on Wednesday, March 30 at 4 p.m.
