WINTER HAVEN, FL – The Rowan University baseball team defeated Babson College (MA), 12-2 at the RussMatt Central Florida Tournament on Tuesday. The game was played at Chain of Lakes Park Field #2.
Rowan has a 6-3 record, while Babson is 5-2. Left-hander Mark Porter (sr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Lower Merion (PA)) pitched two innings in relief for the win (1-0). He surrendered two hits and struck out three batters. Right-hander Steven Melchiorre (so. Atco, NJ/Hammonton) started the game and went 4.2 innings. He allowed two earned runs and struck out four hitters. Righty Jeff Buress took the loss (0-1) for the Beavers. He surrendered five runs, four earned in six innings.
Profs’ right fielder Kevin O’Brien (sr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) registered two hits (five at bats), three RBIs, one run scored and a triple. Designated hitter Nick Turano (jr. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) posted two hits (four at bats), two RBIs and one run scored. Shortstop Marc Magliaro (jr. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) was one for three with three RBIs, two runs scored and a triple. Third baseman Brad Woodend (sr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) went three for four with one RBI and one run scored. Left fielder Scott Weaver (sr. Ledgewood, NJ/Roxbury) produced one hit (four at bats) and scored three times.
Catcher C.J. Szymczak (so. Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) added one hit (four at bats), one RBI and one run scored. Second baseman Brandon Winkler (jr. Glendora, NJ/Paul VI) had two hits in three trips to the plate and scored once. Center fielder Matt Citro (sr. Bloomsbury, NJ/Phillipsburg) contributed with one hit (four at bats) and one RBI, while first baseman Matt Hill (jr. Hamilton Square, NJ/Robbinsville) was one for three with one run scored. Pinch hitter/first baseman Rich Fagan (so. Nutley, NJ/St. Benedict’s Prep) chipped in with one hit and one RBI and pinch hitter/catcher Connor Grant (fr. Shrewsbury, NJ/Red Bank Reg.) had a double and one run scored.
For Babson, first baseman Travis Jonasson and third baseman Chris Kucher both compiled three hits (five at bats) and one RBI. Designated hitter Dave Ahern and shortstop Pat Matvichuk recorded two hits (four at bats) and one run scored apiece. One of Matvichuk’s hits was a double.
Rowan went ahead, 2-0 in the top of the first inning. Magliaro led off with a walk and Weaver followed with a single. O’Brien’s single scored Magliaro and moved Weaver to third. Turano hit a sacrifice fly to left field that brought Weaver home. In the bottom half, Ahern singled and moved to third on Jonasson’s single. Kucher drove in Ahern with a single to cut the deficit to one (2-1).
Rowan tacked on one run in the third. Weaver reached base on an error advanced to second on a ground out. After a single by Turano, Weaver crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Citro. In the fourth, Winkler got on with a single and he went to third on a single by Woodend. Magliaro’s sacrifice fly to center field plated Winkler. The Beavers came within two (4-2) after adding a run in the bottom of the fifth. Matvichuk doubled and came home on a two out single by Jonasson.
The Profs scored seven runs in the top of the seventh. Magliaro’s triple knocked in Woodend, who reached base with a single. After Weaver was hit by a pitch, O’Brien ripped a triple that drove in Magliaro and Weaver. Turano followed with a single, scoring O’Brien. Hill walked and Turano crossed the plate on an error with Szymczak at bat. Winkler was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Woodend’s single brought Hill home and Szymczak scored on a ground out by Magliaro. Rowan picked up one run in the top of the ninth. Grant doubled and moved to third on pinch hitter/second baseman Rob Wilgus’ (jr. Woolwich, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) single. Fagan’s single knocked in Grant.
Rowan is off on Wednesday, March 16. The Profs continue their spring break trip on Thursday, March 17 against FDU-Florham at 4:30 p.m. The game is at Lake Myrtle Park Main Field in Auburndale, FL.
