Rowan Defeats Wheaton (MA), 6-1

LEESBURG, FL – The Rowan University baseball team had a 6-1 victory over Wheaton College (MA) at the RussMatt Central Florida Tournament on Monday. The game was played at Lake Sumter Community College.

Rowan improves to 5-3, while Wheaton has a 1-1 record. Right-hander Mike Swietanski (sr. Woodbury, NJ/West Deptford) pitched six innings for the win (1-1). He only allowed four hits and one unearned run, while striking out eight hitters. Righty Ryan Peterson (sr. Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery) was on the mound for the final three innings to pick up his first save of the season. He gave up three hits and had two strikeouts. Right-hander Alex Palioca took the loss for the Lyons (0-1). He surrendered three earned runs on eight hits in seven innings.

Shortstop Marc Magliaro (jr. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) led the Profs with two hits (four at bats), one RBI, one run scored and a triple. Left fielder Scott Weaver (sr. Ledgewood, NJ/Roxbury) went one for three with two runs scored. Third baseman Brad Woodend (sr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) contributed with two hits (three at bats), one RBI, one run scored and a double. Center fielder Matt Citro (sr. Bloomsbury, NJ/Phillipsburg) added one hit (four at bats), one RBI and one run scored. Catcher Nick Turano (jr. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) registered a double and one RBI, while right fielder Kevin O’Brien (sr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) scored once.

For Wheaton, catcher Dan Gusovsky was two for three with one RBI. First baseman Sean Munley produced two hits (three at bats) and one run scored. Designated hitter Mike Bisceglia added two hits in four trips to the plate.

The Lyons took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Munley walked and went to second on a passed ball. Gusovsky hit a two out double down the right field line and Munley came home. The Profs tied the game (1-1) in the top of the fourth. Weaver had a leadoff single to center field. O’Brien followed with a bunt single that moved Weaver to second. Turano’s sacrifice bunt advanced the runners to second and third. Weaver scored on a ground out by Citro.

Rowan went ahead, 2-1 with one run in the seventh. Citro had a bunt single to start the inning and he reached second on second baseman Brandon Winkler’s (jr. Glendora, NJ/Paul VI) single. With two outs, Woodend ripped a double down the right field line, plating Citro.

The Profs tacked on three runs in the eighth and one in the ninth. Magliaro singled up the middle in the eighth. Weaver was hit by a pitch and Magliaro went to third on a passed ball. Magliaro came home on a wild pitch and Weaver moved to second. O’Brien followed with a walk. The runners advanced to second and third after a failed pickoff attempt. Turano drove in Weaver with a double to right field. O’Brien scored on a ground out by pinch hitter Rich Fagan (so. Nutley, NJ/St. Benedict’s Prep). In the ninth, Magliaro’s triple knocked Woodend in.

Rowan continues its spring break trip on Tuesday, March 15 against Babson College (MA) at 9:30 a.m. The game is at Chain of Lakes Park Field #2 in Winter Haven, FL.
