ASHLAND, VA – The Rowan University baseball team had a 14-1 nonconference win at Randolph-Macon College on Sunday afternoon.
Rowan improves to 2-1 overall, while Randolph-Macon has a 3-4 record. Right-hander Steven Melchiorre (so. Atco, NJ/Hammonton) tossed five scoreless innings for the win (1-0). He only surrendered four hits and struck out five hitters. Lefty Curtis Arsi (jr. Washington Twp., NJ/Westwood Reg.) pitched the final four innings for the save. He allowed five hits and one unearned run, while striking out seven batters. Left-hander Tyler Kane (so. Mechanicville, VA/Hanover) took the loss for the Yellow Jackets.
The Profs' offense was led by first baseman Eric Newell (sr. Haddon Heights, NJ/Haddon Heights) with two hits (four at bats), five RBIs, two runs scored and two doubles. Left fielder Eric Perez (fr. Hopelawn, NJ/Woodbridge) went one for two with four RBIs, two runs scored and a homer. Second baseman Brandon Winkler (jr. Glendora, NJ/Paul VI) produced four hits (five at bats), two RBIs, one run scored and two doubles. Right fielder Kevin O’Brien (sr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) added two hits (four at bats) and two runs scored.
Third baseman Bobby Gorski (sr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) contributed with one hit (two at bats), three runs scored and one RBI. Catcher Nick Turano (jr. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) provided two hits (four at bats), one run scored and a double. Designated hitter Rich Fagan (so. Nutley, NJ/St. Benedict’s Prep) had one RBI, while center fielder Scott Bruno (fr. Middletown, NJ/Middletown S.), shortstop Marc Magliaro (jr. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) and pinch hitter/shortstop Mark Benak (fr. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) each scored once.
For the Yellow Jackets, center fielder Jeb Weymouth (so. Rockville, VA/Hanover) compiled two hits (three at bats) and a double. First baseman Jordan Walton (jr. Mechanicsville, VA/Lee-Davis), designated hitter Cory Jackson (sr. Beaverdam, VA/PH-Ashland) and pinch hitter Ryan Dickerson (sr. Chesterfield, VA/Matoaca) hit one double apiece.
Rowan went ahead, 1-0 in the top of the second inning. Gorski and Newell walked. With two outs, Winkler hit a single to left field bringing Gorski home. The Profs tacked on four runs in the third. O’Brien had an infield single and Turano’s double to left field moved him to third. After Gorski was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Newell doubled to left field, scoring Turano and O’Brien. Fagan reached base on a throwing error and Newell and Gorski both crossed the plate.
In the fourth, O’Brien singled to right field. Gorski hit a single down the left field line and O’Brien scored on a throwing error. Rowan added four runs in the fourth to go ahead, 10-0. With the bases loaded, Newell ripped a three-run double to left field. Winkler drove in Newell with a double down the right field line.
Rowan recorded four runs in the top of the ninth on a grand slam by Perez. In the bottom half, pinch hitter Michael Helbig (so. Midlothian, VA/Midlothian) walked. He advanced to third on Dickerson’s double to left center field. Helbig came home on a passed ball.
Rowan plays Franklin & Marshall College in its home opener on Friday, March 4 at 2:30 p.m.
