CARLISLE, PA – The Rowan University women’s basketball team defeated Dickson College, 59-52 in the consolation game of the Days Inn Tip-off Tournament on Sunday. The tournament was held at Dickson.
Forward Lauren Creel (sr. Pennsauken, NJPennsauken) led the Profs (2-1) with a career high 21 points. She was named to the All-Tournament Team. In the championship, SUNY Cortland plays Rochester Institute of Technology. In the first round on Saturday, Cortland won 58-47 over Rowan while RIT had an 82-67 victory against Dickinson.
Guard Alissa Lamey (sr. Northfield, NJ/Mainland Reg.) contributed with 12 points. Center Stephanie Krauss (jr. Franklinville, NJ/Delsea Reg.) grabbed seven rebounds and added six points. Forward Lauren Gregg (sr. Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood) chipped in with eight points.
For the Red Devils (0-4), guard Taylor Miller (sr. Red Lions, PA/Red Lion) and forward Gillian Ferko (fr. Palmerton, PA/Marian Catholic) each totaled 10 points. Miller also pulled down eight boards while Ferko had six. Guard Lindsay Finnerty (jr. Tenalfy, NJ/Tenafly) added nine points and six rebounds.
There were three ties in the first 5:20 of the game. The last one (9-9) came at 14:40 when Ferko made the first of two free throws. Her second gave Dickinson the lead that it held until 9:26. Guard Ashley Waring (sr. Pennsauken, NJ/Pennsauken) nailed a three that tied the score at 20 for the Profs. Guard Bridget Borgese (jr. Swarthmore, PA/Notre Dame de Namur) followed with a jumper (8:20) to go back up by two (22-20).
Rowan answered with seven straight points for a five point advantage (27-22) with 2:41 left. Forward Erin Farrell (jr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) had the tying basket (7:25) and Creel made two foul shots (6:13). Farrell added a free throw (3:28) and guard Jade Bonder (fr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) had a layup. Miller ended the half with two free throws (2:20) to trail 27-24 at the intermission.
In the second period, Dickinson took the lead at 13:30 (38-37) after a jumper by Miller. Rowan followed with a 12-2 run to go ahead by nine points (49-40) at 8:40. Creel produced eight of the 12 points. Finnerty’s two free throws at 4:52 cut the deficit to three points (49-46). Creel hit jumpers at 4:30 (51-46) and 1:23 (53-48) to keep the Profs on top.
Miller had a basket (1:02) for the Red Devils and they trailed 53-50. In the final 30 seconds, Rowan made six straight foul shots (59-50). Lamey registered four (0:30, 0:19) and Gregg had two (0:08). Borgese’s layup with three seconds on the clock ended the game.
Next, Rowan hosts Delaware Valley College on Tuesday, November 22 at 8 p.m.
