CARLISLE, PA – The SUNY Cortland women’s basketball team won, 58-47 over Rowan University in the first round of the Days Inn Tip-off Tournament on Saturday night. The tournament is hosted by Dickinson College.
In the consolation game on Sunday, Rowan (1-1) plays Dickinson (0-3) at 2 p.m. Cortland (2-0) meets Rochester Institute of Technology (1-0) in the championship at 4 p.m. In the other first round game, RIT defeated Dickinson, 82-67.
Guard Brittany Cohen (sr. Fayetteville, NY/Jamesville-DeWitt) led the Red Dragons with 18 points, including five three-pointers. Guard Molly Byrne (sr. Syracuse, NY/Bishop Ludden) collected 14 points and six rebounds. Guard Ally Biordi (sr. Beacon, NY/Beacon) contributed with 13 points while guard Megan Touhey (so. Maine, NY/Maine-Endwell) grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.
For the Profs, forward Lauren Gregg (sr. Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood) totaled 21 points and nine rebounds. Forward Lauren Creel (sr. Pennsauken, NJ/Pennsauken) registered 13 points and eight boards. Guard Alissa Lamey (sr. Northfield, NJ/Mainland Reg.) scored 10 points. Guard Chanelle Banta (sr. Bergenfield, NJ/Bergenfield) recorded a career high nine rebounds.
Cortland started the second half with a 10-point lead (27-17). Biordi made the score 34-17 (17:38) with a layup. Rowan followed with six straight points to cut the deficit to 11 points (34-23) at 15:23. Creel scored four points and Gregg had two. At 14:42, Cohen nailed a three that made the score 37-23. The Profs answered with an eight-point surge to pull within six points (37-31) at 12:20. Gregg and Lamey each had a layup while Creel hit four foul shots. Biordi’s three-pointer at 9:31 put the Red Dragons back up by 10 (42-32). Gregg made a three at 7:43 to trail by five (42-37).
Cortland stayed ahead with an 8-2 run (50-39) that ended at 5:23. Byrne produced two threes and Touhey had a layup. After two free throws by center Kate Matthews (fr. Clarks, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) at 4:57, Rowan trailed 50-41. The Red Dragons were ahead by 16 (58-42) after two foul shots by Biordi with 3:11 left. Creel’s two free throws at 2:10 ended the scoring (58-47). She registered 13 points in the final period and Gregg followed with 12.
Cortland started the game with a 14-6 run that ended at 13:21. Cohen scored nine of the 14 points. Biordi made the score 17-6 with a three (12:26). Rowan pulled within three points (17-14) after a 8-0 run. Gregg (6:53) and Lamey (5:59) had back-to-back three-pointers then Gregg hit a jumper (4:35). The Red Dragons answered with a 10-3 surge to end the half with a 10-point lead (27-17). Byrne and Touhey each scored five points.
