GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University women’s basketball team opened the season with a 71-61 win over Misericordia University on Tuesday night.
The Profs had three players in double figures. Forward Lauren Gregg (sr. Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood) scored 19 points while forward Lauren Creel (sr. Pennsauken, NJ/Pennsauken) and center Kate Matthews (fr. Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) each contributed with 18 points. It was a career-high for Creel. Gregg also grabbed nine rebounds and had five steals. Guard Alissa Lamey (sr. Northfield, NJ/Mainland Reg.) collected 10 assists.
For the Cougars (0-1), center Christine Marks (sr. Milford, PA/Delaware Valley) recorded game-highs of 27 points and 11 boards. Forward Kayla Sileo (jr. Throop, PA/Holy Cross) came off the bench for 14 points and seven rebounds. Forward Jesse Robinson (sr. Barton, NY/Tioga Central) and guard Tyann McDaniel (jr. Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) added nine and eight points respectively. McDaniel also dished six assists.
Rowan trailed by two points (30-28) after the first half. The score was tied four times in the second period before the Profs took the lead for good. Marks’ three at 15:18 tied the score at 39. Rowan scored nine straight points and went ahead 48-39 with 13:17 remaining. Gregg led the way with seven points in the surge. Marks answered with three straight foul shots, one at 12:18 and two at 11:49. The Cougars trailed by six points (48-42).
Creel had a three-point play (10:30) and a layup (10:13) to go up by 11 (53-42). Guard Chanelle Banta (sr. Bergenfield, NJ/Bergenfield) followed with a basket (9:45) for a 13 point advantage (55-42). Sileo cut the deficit to nine points (55-46) with a layup at 7:52. Creel’s jumper at 6:25 made the score 61-46. Rowan was up by 11 (66-55) at 3:13 after a three-pointer by Lamey. Misericordia pulled within six points (67-61) when Sileo hit a three at the 58 second mark. The Profs ended the game with four straight foul shots, two apiece by Banta (0:43) and Gregg (0:19). Creel compiled 14 second half points and Gregg scored 13.
Rowan only had the lead three times in the first half. Gregg put the Profs up by one (6-5) with a jumper at 14:49. Misericordia was ahead 9-6 at 13:08. Matthews and Lamey had back-to-back baskets at 12:27 and 12:12 that made the score 10-9. Marks put the Cougars on top again (11-10) at 11:38. Matthews hit a jumper (10:32) and she made a free throw (10:03) that gave Rowan its last lead of the period (13-11).
Sileo followed with a basket (9:44) and a three (9:14). Marks’ basket at 8:56 gave the Cougars a five point advantage (18-13). With 2:27 left, Marks had a layup that made the score 30-25. The Profs had a foul shot by guard Jade Bonder (fr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) (2:14) and Creel hit a jumper (0:47) to trail by two (30-28) at the intermission
Rowan travels to Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA for the Days Inn-Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday and Sunday, November 19-20. The Profs play SUNY Cortland on Saturday at 8 p.m. while prior Dickinson faces Rochester Institute of Technology at 6 p.m. On Sunday, the consolation is slated for 2 p.m. followed by the championship at 4 p.m.
