HAVERFORD, PA – The Rowan University field hockey team defeated host Haverford College, 5-2 on Saturday afternoon.

The Profs have a 2-0 record while the Fords are 0-1 on the season. Rowan is ranked ninth in the nation in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Preseason Poll.

Forwards Nicole Valianti (sr. Oaklyn, NJ/Collingswood) and Julie Cairone (jr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) each scored twice. Cairone also added an assist. Forward Lauren Ross (sr. Gloucester City, NJ/Gloucester) contributed with one goal.

Back Roxanne Jaffe (jr. State College, PA/State College) and midfielder Alex Waleko (sr. East Hampton, NY/East Hampton) contributed with one goal apiece for Haverford. Attack Mary Hobbs (so. Wilmington, DE/The Tatnall School) picked up an assist.

The Fords compiled 32 shots and the Profs took 18. In the Rowan goal, Lisa Apt (jr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) recorded 15 saves in 65:22. Goalie Jen Goldberg (so. Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) played the remainder of the game and turned away two shots. Haverford goaltender Maggie Cronin (sr. Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) made four saves in the first half. Courtney Knill (so. Woodbine, MD/Gleneig) was in the goal for the second period and had two saves.

Valianti put Rowan on the scoreboard first with a goal at the 55 second mark with an assist from Cairone. Less than three minutes later, Cairone recorded an unassisted goal for a 2-0 advantage.
Haverford’s goal came on a penalty stroke (23:04) by Jaffe.

In the second half, Ross added an unassisted goal at 35:16. Waleko hit the net at 52:11 on a pass from Hobbs. Cairone made the score 4-2 on a penalty stroke at 58:20. Valianti added an insurance goal with 4:38 left.

Next week, Rowan plays at Ursinus College on Wednesday, September 8 at 7 p.m.
