GRANTHAM, PA – The Messiah College field hockey team shut out visiting Rowan University, 3-0 on Saturday afternoon.
The Falcons (3-1) are ranked second in the preseason poll while the Profs (2-2) are ninth. Messiah was the runner-up last year at the NCAA Division III Field Hockey Championship Tournament.
In the first 10 minutes of the game, Messiah went ahead 2-0. Forward Juliana Hershey (so. Smoketown, PA/Lancaster Mennonite) started the scoring at 5:48 with an unassisted goal. Midfielder Brooke Sands (fr. Reading, PA/Schuylkill Valley) had the second goal with an assist from midfielder Amber (Philpot) Good (sr. Narvon, PA/Pequea Valley). Messiah’s final goal came at 60:14 in the second half. Forward Kourtney Ehly (sr. Boiling Springs, PA/Boiling Springs) scored and back Natalie Ziegler (so. Myerstown, PA/Eastern Lebanon Co.) had the assist.
Messiah accumulated 24 shots and Rowan had three. Prof goalie Lisa Apt (jr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) recorded 16 saves. For the Falcons, goalies Molly Gebrosky (fr. Latrobe, PA/Milton Hershey) and Kayleigh Stewart (fr. Stroudburg, PA/Stroudburg) made one and two saves respectively, each playing 35 minutes.
Next week, Rowan hosts FDU-Florham on Wednesday, September 15 at 7 p.m.
