GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University field hockey team started the season with a 6-0 win over visiting Cabrini College on Wednesday night.
Forwards Lauren Ross (sr. Gloucester City, NJ/Gloucester) and Nicole Valianti (sr. Oaklyn, NJ/Collingswood) each scored twice. Forward Marisa Schoepflin (so. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) contributed with one goal and one assist. Midfielder Erin Bernat (so. Glassboro, NJ/Glassboro) recorded a goal on a penalty stroke. Midfielders Ashley Adams (jr. Erial, NJ/Timber Creek Reg.) and Rachael Dix (jr. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) each registered an assist.
The Profs (1-0) are ranked ninth in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Preseason Poll. It was also the first game of the year for the Cavaliers. Rowan totaled 23 shots while Cabrini had five. In the Cavaliers’ goal, Caitlin Donahue (sr. Langhorne, PA/Neshaminy) turned away 18 shots. For the Profs, goalie Lisa Apt (jr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) made three saves in 64 minutes. Goalie Jen Goldberg (so. Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) played the last six minutes and stopped one shot.
Rowan was ahead 1-0 after the first half. Ross scored at 22:42 on a cross from the right side of the net by Adams. Valianti started the scoring in the second period. She had an unassisted goal at 44:04. Schoepflin put the Profs up 3-0 at the 60 minute mark. Ross picked up her second goal at 62:38 when she tipped in a shot by Dix. Bernat’s penalty stroke goal came at 66:05. Valianti recorded the final goal (67:40) with an assist from Schoepflin.
Rowan’s next game is at Haverford College on Saturday, September 4 at 1 p.m.
