Johns Hopkins Hands Rowan First Loss, 9-4 in NCAA Championship Tournament

TRENTON, NJ – Top seeded Johns Hopkins University defeated the sixth seed Rowan University, 9-4 in the first round of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament on Friday. The double elimination first round tournament is being held at Waterfront Park.

Johns Hopkins (42-4) advances to the 5 p.m. game on Saturday, March 22 and will play the winner of the 1 p.m. contest. Rowan (26-15-1) takes on the winner of tonight’s 7:45 p.m. game between second seeded Kean University and the third seed Widener University at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Earlier on Friday, Widener (27-13) beat Keystone College, 7-3 and Kean (36-11) had a 3-2 victory over Alvernia University. Keystone (30-9) and Alvernia (33-12) were eliminated from the tournament. The winner at Trenton will advance to the finals of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament on Friday, May 28-Sunday, June 1 at Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton, WI.

Left-hander Greg Harbeck (sr. Glen Ridge, NJ/Montclair Kimberley Academy) earned the win on the mound. He (8-0) pitched a complete game, surrendering just five hits and one earned run. Lefty Michael Cox (jr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill E.) took the loss. He (4-2) gave up seven earned runs in five innings.

Blue Jays’ second baseman Brian Youchak (gr. Pittsburgh, PA/Vincentian Academy) went three for four with three RBIs and one run scored. First baseman Chris Huisman (sr. Davidsonville, MD/Archbishop Spalding) posted two hits (four at bats), one RBI and one run scored. Shortstop James Teta (sr. Centereach, NY/Sachem) contributed with two hits (three at bats) and three runs scored. Center fielder Dave Kahn (so. Cooper City, FL/American Heritage) was two for five with one run scored. Catcher Joe Borrelli (sr. Wyckoff, NJ/Ramapo) and right fielder Matthew Bernardi (sr. Lake Forest, IL/Lake Forest) both produced one hit, one RBI and one run scored.

For Rowan, third baseman Brad Woodend (jr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) compiled two hits (four at bats), one RBI and one run scored. Left fielder Scott Weaver (jr. Ledgewood, NJ/Roxbury) had one hit (four at bats), two RBIs and a double. Center fielder Matt Citro (jr. Bloomsbury, NJ/Phillipsburg), shortstop Marc Magliaro (so. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) and second baseman Dave Lenig (sr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) each scored once. Catcher Nick Turano (so. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) drove in one run.

With one out in the bottom of the second inning, third baseman Lee Bolyard (sr. Burke, VA/Lake Braddock) singled. Borrelli followed with a double to left center field that scored Bolyard. After Teta was hit by a pitch, both runners advanced on a passed ball. Borrelli came home on a ground out by Bernardi. Huisman hit a single over the shortstop’s head that plated Teta.

Rowan tied the game (3-3) with three runs in the top of the third. Woodend singled and Citro was hit by a pitch. Lenig reached on a fielder’s choice, Woodend went to third and Citro got to second on an error. Weaver ripped a double to left field bringing Woodend and Citro home. Turano hit a sacrifice fly to center field and Lenig scored. In the bottom half, Kahn led off with a double to left field. He advanced to third on an out and crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Swarr.

In the fourth, Magliaro reached first on a fielder’s choice. He went to second on a wild pitch and moved to third on an error. Woodend drove him in with a single to right center field. Johns Hopkins countered with one run (5-4) in the bottom of the inning. Teta singled to center field. Huisman’s single sent Teta to third. Youchak followed with a single to left field that knocked in Teta.

The Blue Jays tacked on three runs in the sixth to increase the lead to four (8-4). Teta and Bernardi had back-to-back singles. Huisman reached on a catcher’s interference to load the bases with no outs. Youchak hit a single up the middle to bring in Teta and Bernardi. After one out, left fielder Jesse Sikorski (jr. Syracuse, NY/Christian Brothers Academy) walked to load the bases. Designated hitter John Swarr (sr. Radnor, PA/Conestoga) got on following a second catcher’s interference, scoring Huisman. Sikorski’s sacrifice fly to right field scored Youchak in the eighth.
