TRENTON, NJ – Sixth seeded Rowan University had a 8-3 victory over second seeded Kean University in the first round of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament on Thursday. The first round tournament is being held at Waterfront Park.
Rowan (26-14-1) plays the top seed Johns Hopkins University (41-4) on Friday at 4:30 p.m. Kean (35-11) takes on the fourth seed Alvernia University (33-11) at 1:15 p.m. Also on Friday, the third seed Widener University (26-13) faces fifth seeded Keystone College (30-8) at 10 a.m. The winner of the Widener/Keystone game challenges the winner of the Alvernia/Kean game at 7:45 p.m.
Earlier on Thursday, Alvernia defeated Moravian College,7-3. Widener topped Manhattanville College, 9-2 and Johns Hopkins beat Keystone, 9-4. Moravian (26-15) and Manhattanville (22-21-1) were knocked out of the double elimination tournament. The winner at Trenton will advance to the finals of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament on Friday, May 28-Sunday, June 1 at Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton, WI.
Right-hander Jeff White (jr. Stratford, NJ/Sterling) pitched 8.2 innings for the win. He (7-1) only gave up two earned runs and struck out nine hitters. Righty John O’Hara (jr. Clayton, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) was on the mound for the final out to pick up his sixth save of the season. Right-hander Kevin Herget (fr. Park Ridge, NJ/Park Ridge) took the loss. He (7-1) allowed six earned runs in 3.1 innings.
Rowan right fielder Jordan Marsch (jr. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) went three for four with one RBI and one run scored. Catcher Nick Turano (so. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) compiled two hits (five at bats), two RBIs and one run scored. Shortstop Marc Magliaro (so. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) had one hit (three at bats) and scored two runs. Center fielder Matt Citro (jr. Bloomsbury, NJ/Phillipsburg), second baseman Dave Lenig (sr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) and left fielder Scott Weaver (jr. Ledgewood, NJ/Roxbury) all posted one hit (four at bats), one RBI and one run scored. Third baseman Brad Woodend (jr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) added one run.
Cougars’ left fielder Dylan Laguna (so. Edison, NJ/Edison) collected two hits in four trips to the plate. Second baseman Michael Moceri (sr. Yardville, NJ/Hamilton E.) was one for five with one RBI. Designated hitter Ken Gregory (jr. Pittstown, NJ/Immaculata) posted one hit (four at bats) and one run scored. Right fielder Nick Nolan (jr. Linden, NJ/Roselle Catholic) contributed with one RBI and third baseman Chris Carrano (jr. Lincoln Park, NJ/Boonton) scored twice.
In the top of the second, Gregory led off with a double to center field. He moved to third on a single by Laguna. Nolan’s sacrifice fly plated Gregory. Rowan scored six runs in the third. Magliaro walked with one out. Woodend reached base on a fielder’s choice and Magliaro advanced to second on an error. Citro followed with a walk to load the bases. Lenig also walked and Magliaro came home. Weaver drove in Woodend with a single to right field. Turano ripped a single through the left side knocking in Citro and Lenig. Marsch added a RBI single.
Citro hit a double down the left line that scored Magliaro in the fourth. Kean got one run in the top of the fifth. Carrano led off with a walk. He went to third on shortstop Steven Giambrone’s (so. Roebling, NJ/Florence Twp.) single through the right side. Moceri followed with a single to left field that brought in Carrano. In the bottom half, Marsch doubled to right center field and later scored on a balk.
