GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University baseball team tied Neumann University, 9-9 in a nonconference game on Wednesday. The game was called due to darkness after the 10th inning.
The Knights led 9-8 heading into the bottom of the ninth inning. Profs’ center fielder Matt Citro (jr. Bloomsbury, NJ/Phillipsburg) led with a single and then stole second. Pinch hitter Matt Johanson (sr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) ripped a single up the middle plating Citro for the tying run. Both teams were scoreless in the 10th.
Rowan has a 20-12-1 overall record, while Neumann is 16-13-1. For the Profs, shortstop Marc Magliaro (so. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) went three for five with three runs scored. Citro compiled two hits (six at bats), a double and scored twice. Left fielder Scott Weaver (jr. Ledgewood, NJ/Roxbury) was one for two with two RBIs and two runs scored. Designated hitter Kevin O’Brien (jr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) produced two hits (three at bats) and two RBIs. Third baseman Dave Lenig (sr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) added two hits (three at bats) and one run scored.
For Neumann, catcher Joe Armata (fr. Philadelphia, PA/Neumann-Goretti) totaled two hits (five at bats) and two runs scored. Center fielder Bobby Callan (so. Drexel Hill, PA/Monsignor Bonner) had one hit (two at bats) and two runs scored. Second baseman Brent Tamane (so. Pickering, ONT/Pine Ridge) contributed with two hits (four at bats) and two RBIs. Left fielder Mathieu Vallieres (jr. Quebec City, QC/St. Patrick’s) went two for five with one RBI and one run scored. Right fielder Gary Mitchell (jr. Huntingdon Valley, PA/Lower Moreland) registered one hit (four at bats), two RBIs and one run scored.
Rowan went ahead 2-0 after scoring one run in the first and third innings. Citro reached base with a double and Weaver drove him in with a single in the first. Magliaro singled to lead off the third and later came home on an error. In the top of the fourth, the Knights scored two runs to tie the game. Compton doubled to left field. Walks by Armata and center fielder Nick Martin (so. Pittsgrove, NJ/A.P. Schalick) loaded the bases. Tamane singled to center field bringing in Compton and Armata.
Neumann added two runs in the top of the fifth for a 4-2 lead. Mitchell and Grossi had back-to-back singles. Mitchell came home on a wild pitch and Grossi moved to second. Grossi crossed the plate on an error. In the bottom half, Magliaro singled up the middle and moved to second on a wild pitch. He scored on an error with Citro at bat.
In the top of the sixth, Armata had the first run on an error. Vallieres’ single drove in Callan. Pinch runner Ross Sweeney (jr. Rockville, MD/Magruder) was knocked in on a ground out by Mitchell. Vallieres scored on a fielder’s choice by first baseman Matt Grossi (jr. Ridley Park, PA/Ridley). Rowan got one run in the bottom half to come within four (8-4). O’Brien singled to right center field advancing Weaver to third. Weaver came home on an error.
The Knights recorded one run in the top of the seventh. With the bases loaded and one out, Mitchell reached first on a fielder’s choice and Callan crossed the plate. Rowan scored four runs in the bottom of the inning to cut the deficit to one (9-8). Weaver was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, bringing third baseman Mike Scott (jr. Lafayette, NJ/High Point Reg.) home. O’Brien followed with a two run single and Weaver came in on an error.
Rowan travels to Kean University for a conference game on Thursday, April 29 at 3:30 p.m.
