Rowan Tops Rutgers-Camden, 15-6

CAMDEN, NJ – The Rowan University baseball team had a 15-6 victory over Rutgers-Camden in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Thursday night.

The Profs are 19-11 overall and 10-3 in the conference. The Scarlet Raptors have a 16-13 overall record and a 5-6 NJAC mark. Right-hander Jeff White (jr. Stratford, NJ/Sterling) pitched seven innings, allowing four earned runs. He (5-1) posted seven strikeouts. Righty John Diamond (jr. Mt. Holly, NJ/Holy Cross) gave up seven earned runs in two innings for the loss (2-4).

Rowan was led by shortstop Marc Magliaro (so. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) with four hits (four at bats), two RBIs and one run scored. Center fielder Matt Citro (jr. Bloomsbury, NJ/Phillipsburg) went three for five with two RBIs, one run scored and a double. Second baseman Brandon Winkler (so. Glendora, NJ/Paul VI) added three hits (five at bats), two RBIs, two runs scored and a double. First baseman Matt Johanson (sr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) registered two hits (four at bats), three runs scored, one RBI and a homer.

Third baseman Dave Lenig (sr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) tallied one hit (three at bats), two RBIs, two runs scored and a double. Designated hitter Sean Bowen (so. South Harrison, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) was one for four with two RBIs and one run scored. Catcher Nick Turano (so. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) compiled one hit (six at bats), two RBIs and one run scored. Left fielder Scott Weaver (jr. Ledgewood, NJ/Roxbury) posted two hits (five at bats) and scored twice. Right fielder Jordan Marsch (sr. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) had a double, one RBI and one run scored.

For Rutgers-Camden, first baseman Matt Hunt (sr. Marlton, NJ/St. Joseph (Hammonton)) totaled three hits (five at bats), two RBIs, one run scored and a double. Designated hitter John Santilli (so. Folsom, NJ/St. Joseph (Hammonton)) and shortstop Kyle Ballay (sr. Delran, NJ/Delran) both produced two hits (five at bats), one RBI and one run scored. Center fielder Scott Fruits (sr. Turnersville, NJ/Paul VI) collected a triple and one RBI. Left fielder Tom Clarke (jr. Brick, NJ/Brick Mem.), right fielder Steve Myers (sr. Millville, NJ/Millville) and third baseman Jamie Williams (sr. Vineland, NJ/Delsea Reg.) all had one hit and one run scored.

Rowan scored six runs in the top of the first inning. Turano’s single down the left field line plated Winkler and Citro. Bowen had a two RBI single to left field. Lenig was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, bringing Marsch home. Winkler drove in Bowen with a single. The Profs added one run in the top of the second. Weaver walked and scored on a double by Marsch. The Scarlet Raptors cut the deficit to six (7-1) in the bottom half. Fruits tripled to right center field, scoring Myers.

Johanson hit a leadoff solo home run in the fifth. Rowan tacked on three runs in the top of the seventh. Lenig knocked in Johanson with a double and he crossed the plate on Winkler’s double down the left field line. Winkler scored on an error. In the bottom half, Rutgers-Camden recorded four runs to come within five (10-5). Clarke led off with a double and scored on a single by Santilli. Hunt’s double to left center field brought Ballay home. Hunt crossed the plate on an error with Myers at bat.

In the top of the eighth, Magliaro drove in Johanson and O’Brien with a single. Citro doubled down the left field line plating Lenig and Magliaro. The Scarlet Raptors scored their final run in the bottom half. Hunt singled to left center field bringing home Williams, who reached base with a single.

Rowan travels to Ramapo College for a NJAC doubleheader on Saturday, April 24 at 11:30 a.m.
