HAVERFORD, PA – The Rowan University baseball team won 10-8 in 10 innings at Haverford College on Tuesday.
The Fords tied the game at eight in the bottom of the ninth. Center fielder Matt Citro (jr. Bloomsbury, NJ/Phillipsburg) singled to center field, scoring shortstop Matt Magliaro (so. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) in the 10th. Citro came home on a single by second baseman Brandon Winkler (so. Glendora, NJ/Paul VI). In the bottom half, right-hander John O’Hara (jr. Clayton, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) struck out three straight batters to earn his fourth save on the year.
Rowan improves to 18-10 overall while Haverford has a 21-11 record. Right-hander Mike Swietanski (jr. West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford) pitched three relief innings for the win. Swietanski (2-0) allowed three hits and two earned runs. He had five strikeouts. Right-hander Mike Galetta (jr. Merion, PA/The Haverford School) took the loss.
Citro led the Profs with three hits (five at bats), two RBIs, two runs scored and a home run. Right fielder Jordan Marsch (sr. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) contributed with a homer and four RBIs. Designated hitter Kevin O’Brien (jr. Pennsivlle, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) collected two hits (five at bats), two runs scored, one RBI, a double and a home run. First baseman Eric Newell (jr. Haddon Heights, NJ/Haddon Heights) and third baseman Mike Scott (jr. Lafayette, NJ/High Point Reg.) each had two hits. Magliaro ended the game with one hit (five at bats), two RBIs and one run scored.
For the Fords, designated hitter Jeff Butera (jr. Encinitas, CA/San Dieguito Academy) was two for four with two RBIs, two runs scored and a double. Catcher Jeremy Zoll (s. Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) produced three hits (five at bats), one RBI and a double. Second baseman Louis DeRosa (jr. San Francisco, CA/Lick Wilmerding) collected two doubles and two runs scored. Galetta tallied two hits (four at bats), two runs scored and one RBI. Right fielder Bobby Bailey (jr. Mt. Kisco, NY/Fox Lane) recorded three RBIs and a home run. Left fielder Jake Kaden (sr. Potomac, MD/Landon School) had two hits in five at bats and one run scored.
The Profs got on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning. Citro led off with a home run and left fielder Scott Weaver (jr. Ledgewood, NJ/Roxbury) came home on Marsch’s sacrifice fly to center field. In the bottom half, the Fords cut the deficit to one (2-1). Butera singled in DeRosa who reached base with a double.
Rowan went up 6-1 in the third. Marsch recorded a three run homer and O’Brien followed with a solo shot. Haverford trailed 6-4 after the bottom half. Butera had a double and Galetta walked. They came home on a home run by Bailey.
The Fords tied the score (6-6) with two runs in the fourth. With the bases loaded, Butera had a sacrifice fly that scored Kaden who led off with a double. Galetta plated DeRosa with a single down the left field line.
The Profs had two runs in the fifth to go ahead 8-6. O’Brien doubled to left center field and Newell followed with a single. Newell went to second on a stolen base. Magliaro knocked in O’Brien and Newell with a single. The Fords came back and tied the game in the bottom of the ninth. Zoll posted a RBI double and Galetta crossed the plate on shortstop Charlie Carluccio’s (jr. West Windsor, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro N.) sacrifice fly.
Rowan travels to nonconference Widener University on Wednesday, April 21 for a 3:30 p.m. game.
