Rutgers-Camden Upsets Rowan, 9-6

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rutgers-Camden baseball team defeated 30th ranked Rowan University, 9-6 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Friday.

The Scarlet Raptors are 13-11 overall and 3-5 in the conference. The Profs have a 16-9 overall record and an 8-2 NJAC mark. Right-hander Cory Downham (sr. Pitman, NJ/Pitman) pitched 8.2 innings, allowing four earned runs for the win (5-2). Righty Kyle Ballay (sr. Delran, NJ/Delran) tossed the final 0.1 innings to pick up his second save. Right-hander Kyle Norman (jr. Oakhurst, NJ/Ocean Twp.) threw 0.2 innings in relief, surrendering two earned runs for the loss (2-3).

Rutgers-Camden third baseman Jamie Williams (sr. Vineland, NJ/Delsea Reg.) went four for four with a double and three runs scored. Catcher Greg Hunt (sr. Marlton, NJ/St. Joseph (Hammonton)) added four hits (five at bats), a double, two RBIs and one run scored. First baseman Matt Hunt (sr. Marlton, NJ/St. Joseph (Hammonton)) was one for three with two runs scored and one RBI. Second baseman Jon Hydock (so. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) and designated hitter Tristan Keyser (so. Sicklerville, NJ/Winslow Twp.) both drove in two runs. Left fielder Tom Clarke (jr. Brick, NJ/Brick Mem.) scored twice, while Keyser crossed the plate once.

For Rowan, center fielder Matt Citro (jr. Bloomsbury, NJ/Phillipsburg) registered two hits (five at bats), two RBIs and one run scored. Second baseman Brandon Winkler (so. Glendora, NJ/Paul VI) went two for four with two runs scored and one RBI. Designated hitter Kevin O’Brien (jr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) had two hits (four at bats), one RBI and one run scored. Shortstop Marc Magliaro (so. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) produced two hits (three at bats) and one RBI. Catcher Sean Bowen (so. South Harrison, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) and first baseman Eric Newell (jr. Haddon Heights, NJ/Haddon Heights) both scored once.

The Profs went ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning. Citro singled and stole second. O’Brien drove Citro home with a single to center field. In the top of the third, Clarke and Williams had back-to-back singles. Clarke scored on an error with Keyser at the bat. Ballay singled to right center field, plating Williams. Matt Hunt hit into a fielder’s choice that brought Keyser home.

Rowan pulled within one (3-2) with one run in the bottom of the fourth. Magliaro’s single drove in Winkler. In the top of the fifth, Clarke got on base after an error. Williams followed with a double down the left field line that moved Clarke to third. Keyser’s sacrifice fly scored Clarke. Greg Hunt singled to center field driving in Williams. The Profs took the lead, 6-5 with four runs in the bottom half. Bowen hit a single and went to third on an error that scored O’Brien. Winkler singled in Bowen and Citro ripped a two run single.

In the top of the seventh, Greg Hunt’s single brought Williams home. Hydock had a RBI single down the right field line to put the Scarlet Raptors up, 7-6. Rutgers-Camden tacked on two insurance runs in the top of the ninth. Matt Hunt crossed the plate on an error and Hydock singled in Greg Hunt.

Rowan hosts Rutgers-Newark in a NJAC doubleheader on Saturday, April 16 at 11:30 a.m. Rutgers-Camden travels to New Jersey City University for a doubleheader on Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
