O'Brien's Walk Off Homer Gives Rowan A 5-3 Win Over Richard Stockton

GLASSBORO, NJ – Designated hitter Kevin O’Brien hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to give Rowan University a 5-3 victory over Richard Stockton College in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Thursday.

Rowan trailed, 3-1 entering the bottom of the ninth inning. Third baseman Dave Lenig (sr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) reached base on an error. Left fielder Scott Weaver (jr. Ledgewood, NJ/Roxbury) followed with a walk and Lenig moved to second. Catcher Nick Turano (so. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) hit a single to center field that plated Lenig and Weaver went to third. Right fielder Jordan Marsch (sr. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) got on base on a fielder’s choice and Weaver came home to tie the game at three. O’Brien (jr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) hit the game-winner on the next at bat.

The Profs improve to 16-8 overall and 8-1 in the conference. The Ospreys are 13-13 overall with a 3-5 NJAC mark. Right-hander Ryan Peterson (jr. Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery) earned the win in relief. He (4-0) pitched two scoreless innings, scattering three hits. Righty Chris Cirlincione (jr. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) went the distance for Richard Stockton. He (1-4) allowed one earned run on seven hits, while striking out four hitters.

O’Brien finished the game with two hits (four at bats), three RBIs, two runs scored and two home runs. Center fielder Matt Citro (jr. Bloomsbury, NJ/Phillipsburg) went three for four with a double. Turano was one for four with one RBI. Marsch drove in one run and scored once. Lenig and Weaver each scored one run.

For Richard Stockton, designated hitter Chris Wedding (so. Toms River, NJ/Toms River E.) had three hits (five at bats) and one run scored. Center fielder Chris Discher (sr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill W.) registered two hits (three at bats), one RBI and one run scored. Second baseman Jason Gordon (jr. Brick, NJ/Brick Mem.) was two for four. Shortstop Matt Allen (sr. Salem, NJ/Woodstown) drove in one run, while catcher Nick Scalise (so. Northfield, NJ/Mainland Reg.) scored once.

The Opreys went ahead 2-0 in the top of the fifth inning. Discher walked and Wedding singled to right field. Left fielder Barry Larro (fr. Cedarville, NJ/Cumberland Reg.) reached base on an error and Discher scored. Wedding came home on a ground out by Allen. In the bottom half, O’Brien hit a solo homer to cut the deficit to one (2-1). Richard Stockton took a 3-1 lead with one run the top of the sixth. Scalise crossed the plate on a sacrifice bunt by Discher.
