Richard Stockton Upsets Visiting Rowan, 6-4

POMONA, NJ – The Richard Stockton College baseball team upset Rowan University, 6-4 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Monday.

The Ospreys ended the Profs’ seven-game win streak and it was their first conference loss on the season. Rowan is 15-7 overall and 7-1 in the NJAC. Richard Stockton has a 13-12 record with a 3-4 conference mark.

Shortstop Matt Allen (sr. Salem, NJ/Woodstown) led the way with three hits (five at bats) and one RBI. Catcher Nick Scalise (so. Northfield, NJ/Northfield) and second baseman Jason Gordon (jr. Brick, NJ/Brick Mem.) each chipped in with two hits in four at bats and one run scored. Scalise also recorded a home run. Center fielder Chris Discher (sr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill W.) scored two runs and added one hit (four at bats). Left fielder Barry Larro (fr. Cedarville, NJ/Cumberland Reg.), first baseman Mike Wasco (so. Riverside, NJ/Riverside) and third baseman Gage Mick (fr. Bridgeton, NJ/Cumberland Reg.) all registered one RBI.

Right-hander Chris LaVoie (so. Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Reg.) pitched seven innings for the win. LaVoie (3-0) gave up two runs, one was earned and he had three strikeouts. Lefty Kyle Brown (fr. Southampton, NJ/Seneca) took the loss. Brown is 1-1 on the season.

For the Profs, left fielder Scott Weaver (jr. Ledgewood, NJ/Roxbury) was two for five with two RBIs, one run scored and a double. Catcher Sean Bowen (so. South Harrison, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) totaled three hits in three at bats. Center fielder Matt Citro (jr. Bloomsbury, NJ/Phillipsburg) tallied three hits (five at bats) and two runs scored. Right fielder Jordan Marsch (sr. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) added one hit (four at bats) and one RBI. Second baseman Dave Lenig (sr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) had one RBI.

Rowan got on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning. Citro reached base with a single and stole second. He advanced to third on an error and came home on Weaver’s ground out. In the bottom half, Stockton went ahead 2-1. Allen drove in Discher with a single and Mick’s sacrifice fly plated designated hitter Chris Wedding (so. Toms River, NJ/Toms River E.).

In the second, Profs’ first baseman Matt Johanson (sr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) led off with a triple and scored on a sac fly to right field by Lenig. The score was tied at two. The Ospreys followed with a solo homer by Scalise for a 3-2 advantage.

Richard Stockton scored two runs in the sixth inning and one more in the seventh (6-2). In the sixth, Larro walked with the bases loaded and Gordon crossed the plate. Discher came home on a fielder’s choice with Wasco at bat. In the seventh, right fielder Dan McGuckin (so. Sicklerville, NJ/Winslow Twp.) scored on an error after getting on base with a single.

The Profs scored two runs in the top of the ninth. Citro singled and was knocked in by Weaver with a double. Marsch recorded a sacrifice fly and Weaver came home.

Rowan travels to Messiah College on Tuesday, April 13 for a 3:30 p.m. game.
