GLASSBORO, NJ – Center fielder Matt Citro crossed the plate on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 12th inning to give Rowan University a 3-2 victory over The College of New Jersey in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Thursday.
The game was tied (2-2) after 11 innings. Rowan held TCNJ scoreless in the top of the 12th. In the bottom half, Citro (jr. Bloomsbury, NJ/Phillipsburg) led off with a single to right center field. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by third baseman Brad Woodend (jr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee). Citro advanced to third on a ground out and came home on a wild pitch.
Rowan improves to 9-6, while TCNJ has a 6-9 record. It was the first conference game for both teams. Right-hander Ryan Peterson (jr. Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery) earned the win (3-0) in relief. He tossed five scoreless innings, scattering two hits and striking out five batters. Lefty Michael Cox (jr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill W.) started the game and went seven innings. He gave up two earned runs, while striking out six hitters. Right-hander Joe Marchitelli (jr. Jackson, NJ/Jackson Mem.) threw 2.2 innings in relief for the loss (0-1). Righty Connor Henderson (jr. Monmouth Jct., NJ/S. Brunswick) pitched the first nine innings, surrendering two earned runs. He posted four strikeouts.
The Profs were led by shortstop Marc Magliaro (so. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) with three hits (six at bats), one RBI and two doubles. Citro was two for five with one run scored. Woodend contributed with two hits (four at bats), one run scored and a double. Right fielder Jordan Marsch (sr. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) was one for five with one RBI and a double. First baseman Matt Johanson (sr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) added a double and one run scored.
For the Lions, right fielder Michael Murphy (fr. Staten Island, NY/Staten Island Tech) had two hits (five at bats) and one RBI. Second baseman Scott Kelly (fr. West Windsor, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro N.) and third baseman Nick Cifelli (fr. Ewing, NJ/Ewing) both registered one hit (five at bats) and one run scored. Shortstop Jason Zegarski (jr. Lawrenceville, NJ/Lawrence) produced one hit in five trips to the plate and one RBI. Designated hitter Ryan Anzelone (sr. Vernon, NJ/Vernon Twp.) and first baseman James Ruzich (so. Verona, NJ/Montclair Kimberly Academy) compiled two hits apiece.
TCNJ took a 1-0 lead in the top of the seventh inning. Cifelli doubled to right center field and scored on a single by Murphy. The Lions added one run in the eighth. Kelly walked and stole second base. Zegarski drove in Kelly with a single up the middle. In the bottom half, Woodend doubled down the right field line. Magliaro followed with a double to right field, plating Woodend. Johanson led off with a double in the bottom of the ninth and scored the tying run on a double by Marsch.
